Summary: The first meeting between Cain Hargreaves, future savior of humanity, and the RIFF-1000

Cain's thoughts were racing as he cut through the empty construction site. I shot him! I know I did! How did he survive? He didn't dare look back. It would only slow him down, and he already knew that the man was still following him.
He had think fast. He looked up and smiled as a plan began to form in his mind. He scampered up the half finished building and crouched next to a pile of steel poles. The man came into view. Holding his breath, Cain waited until the man was directly under him and pushed. The poles went tumbling down, crushing the man under them. Cain grinned for a few seconds, before his expression turned to one of horror. The man was getting up! A piece of his scalp had come loose, and Cain could see the gleam of metal underneath.
It's not human! Gasping, Cain leapt from the building and landed hard. He tried to stand up, but it was no use. He was exhausted and hurt, and he had been running for far too long. What was the point? The thing was never going to tire, never going to stop. Despair curdled in Cain's heart.
The thing stepped closer. It stared at Cain blankly, neither pity nor triumph in its empty eyes. Cain glared defiantly. If nothing else, he would meet his death bravely. The thing raised its gun.
BLAM! BLAM!
The thing went flying back, crashing into the building Cain had jumped from. Cain looked behind him, eyes wide. A tall, pale man holding a gigantic gun gazed down at him. There was something oddly metallic in his blue eyes. He shifted the gun under one arm and reached out to Cain. "Come with me if you want to live."
Cain took his hand.
