I have been studying nutrition and supplements in a serious way for almost 9 years. I probably read articles, take notes, and post into my LJ about 30+ hours a week. I can say that I know vastly more than any doctor or nurse I have ever met in person, and the breadth of my knowledge is far broader than most of the health experts I read on line ( ... )

agreed. these affect all cultures but there is more clustering in darker-skinned folk.

The plight of your friend is really sad. So frustrating.

I have a lot of good results with coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, and when I was taking anti-inflammatories, omega 3's, detox supplements, and a thyroid booster.. well that is when I saw the most movement on my scale.

I really believe in the power of natural medicine. The hard part for me is getting the best understanding of which ones are best. Trying to take 12 pills a day doesn't work for me.

Yes. you are a natural healing guru.

I sleep eight hours almost every night now! I was thinking that might be huge given there are studies linking lack of sleep to weight gain...but so far it hasn't had any impact.

test and response. test and response.

coconut oil really works for me. My whole body zings on it..so much I don't even need caffeine.

Something just occurred to me. If it impacts darker skinned people more than white, maybe there is a connection to lack of vitamin D. My friend is very pale, burns easily, so avoids all sun exposure.

Have you ever gotten your vitamin D levels checked? Or tried taking large amounts of D3?

not at all.

I dont' even think they test for that at the doctors office.

is it something I can request?

i want to get a test for folic acid levels too like bearfairie suggested.

I'm glad you've been talking with spider88 about this. Given the direction of her graduate research, I think she'll have the most useful information for you.

I wish I had some concrete advice to offer you. I used to weigh about 195 pounds and couldn't get the fat to come off until I cut HFCS out of my diet entirely, plus a little extra metabolism-hacking by way of increasing my glucose intake (I think I've fooled my body into producing slightly more insulin than it needs without inducing hyperinsulinemia, but I need to figure out how to test that on my own). I dropped 40 pounds in six months, but that was my metabolism and genetics at work there; I've also seen it work for other people of mostly European background, but IIRC spider88 avoids HFCS too and that hasn't worked as well for her. So there's got to be something else at work ( ... )

I don't want you to take this the wrong way meredith. You're definitely not obese but your not as size 5 either. It's great you've gotten your condition mostly under control and I applaud you for it. I am sure its was/is a lot of work and care ( ... )

I'm pretty happy with my current weight. I think if I were much thinner I would feel unhealthy -- in fact, when my weight bottomed out around 145, people were asking if I was sick. I'm back up around 155 these days and that seems to be working really well; I have lots of energy, can walk long distances, and really my only endurance problems are due to my being addicted to cigarettes. So I think this is a healthy weight for me. My BMI went from 29 to 23 ( ... )

i think it is healthy.

the standards we're using seem off to me.

This is a beautiful post (and makes me feel it is too bad that it's locked, because I think a lot of other people would gain benefit from it).

Reminds me of something I wrote several years ago in response to a friend's writing about WLS - though you are dealing with different facets and other implications in your post...

To be fair, I have since met people who've had WLS who are living happily - though they themselves talk about people who are not. Sometimes those latter are people who had really unhealthy chronic habits to begin with, like drinking supersize sodas. You are not one of those ( ... )

I know people who have had WLS that are happy as well and heard stories of people that are not. It's a risk.

I think some form of exercise within physical capabilities is good. It helps get you present in the body to work with your limitations and figure out where you can push yourself and where you can not.

Even if it is doing something gentle like Hatha Yoga.

thanks. I think the first few moments of my sharpening my anger into a call for change were a bit clumsy.

I am, however, finding my voice.

I am passionate have the classical female conditioning that says don't express any opinions unless you are absolutely convinced of them..and with my general degree of skepticism its hard for me to be absolutely convinced of much. ergo why I am still agnostic despite daily communion with G-d.

On this subject after this many years of research I am comfortable enough in my beliefs to take a stand.
