I want more movies like this! I think a lot of my friends would enjoy this movie. Traitors is a Moroccan film about Malika, the leader of an all women punk rock band, trying to make enough money to release her band's album, while dealing with her family and life in contemporary Morocco.
As I said above, I want more movies like this one. The adventures of punk rock heroines, angry and uneasy in their world is like catnip to me. Malika is an easy character to like and root for. Most of the other characters aren't as well defined, but it's not a very long film, and I found Malika strong enough to make up for that.
My favorite part was the first half of the film, which mostly just followed Malika through her life. I confess to knowing nothing about life in Morocco, so the slice of life aspects were really interesting to me. The second half of the film delves more into thriller territory as Malika gets involved in the drug trade in order to make enough money both to keep her family from being evicted and to make her band's album. But that half of the film does come with a female-solidarity plot that I liked. Punk women helping other women, again, this is my thing.
The ending felt a little too pat and easy, but I didn't mind. I wanted a happy ending for Malika, and in this case I'd rather have a slightly too easy happy ending then perhaps a more realistic tragic one.
