I also loved the fact that Joe asked this and David liked that he felt the need to ask him:
David took in a small breath. He knew that this wasn't the suggestion of hiding that it sounded like. His skin would be fine after a shower. This was something else. And Joe usually didn't ask this kind of thing of him. Even now, he looked back down as if realizing that he didn't have the right to ask anything of David.

Yeah, that... just happened. Actually, I don't even think that they wouldn't have such a conversation even behind closed doors (say in their trailers), it's just that in this case, they've been really on the edge all morning (and the weeks leading up to it).
I also loved the fact that Joe asked this and David liked that he felt the need to ask him:
I loved that too. Joe/David gives me the opportunity to write intense pining even though they're together. Hmm. It might be similar to liking intimacy before romance for John/Rodney. It's possibly a fascination with a disconnect between physical intimacy and emotional and in the case of Joe/David rational or appropriate or whatever you would call what their minds dictate their relationship should be like. Oops, sorry for going meta on you ;)
