It's okay to publicly say that my mother has been suffering from Lupus for over 20 years now. It has attacked just about every major functioning system in the body; it has claimed her kidneys, her pancreas, her gallbladder, and it has severely attacked her heart, lungs, liver, muscles, cns, and even her bone structure.

The disease is insiduous. Just when the patient has a few good, functioning, years, and everything seems to be going well, it will attack a new system in a big and scary way. My mother went back to school and got her dietician's degree in the mid 90's, and actually held down a job for a few years, before her osteoporosis (from Lupus drugs) made it impossible for her to get around easily. She went from being a marathon walker (literally) to wheelchair in about two years.

It's a terminal illness that you die from very slowly, over a period of many years, and it's painful and torturous and it never gives up.
