The disease is insiduous. Just when the patient has a few good, functioning, years, and everything seems to be going well, it will attack a new system in a big and scary way. My mother went back to school and got her dietician's degree in the mid 90's, and actually held down a job for a few years, before her osteoporosis (from Lupus drugs) made it impossible for her to get around easily. She went from being a marathon walker (literally) to wheelchair in about two years.
It's a terminal illness that you die from very slowly, over a period of many years, and it's painful and torturous and it never gives up.
