Looking across the ballroom, Sophie felt a sense of satisfaction. Most of the guests had arrived and were mingling and dancing among the holiday decorations which filled the ballroom. She'd begun her work with the children's charity as a secretary when she was seventeen as a means of having a life outside of the Helsing home. In the four years since she'd risen up to become the salaried personal assistant of Eric Bouchard the head of the Luxembourg Children's Charity. Although Sophie had wished to study the viola at the university, Uncle Gustav had protested vehemently and pushed her to accept the position with the charity and remain with him and the boys to help hunt down Alexander Lucard. A combination of money and guilt, she finally gave in. Her life wasn't as she'd imagined but she had grown to like her position and the respite it gave her from home.

The charity ball was a huge success and everyone was having a marvelous time. Or rather almost everyone. Alexander Lucard arrived and Uncle Gustav was bristling at his presence. However, Gustav and the boys were only able to attend the glittering event because of the work Sophie had done helping to organize the event. He'd paid the exorbitant 50,000 euros a plate for himself and his date, she pointed out to him. Whether the elderly man liked it or not, Alexander had every right to be there. Despite her words, Gustav headed in the direction of the blonde vampire and Sophie ran after him.

"Lucard," Gustav rasped.

Bowing slightly, Alexander said, "Good evening, Helsing."

"You have no right to be here," the old man insisted.

Alexander laughed, "I beg to differ. Unlike yourself and your young charges, I paid quite handsomely for the privilege of being here. And I'm presenting Mr. Bouchard with a generous check before the evening is out."

"I'm warning you, Lucard-"

"It will be fine, Uncle Gustav," Sophie interrupted assured him. Giving a pointed look at Alexander she said, "Mr. Lucard understands how to behave like like a gentleman."

"Quite right, my dear," Alexander agreed. Taking her hand he drawled, "Forgive me for not greeting you properly. You look lovely, my darling Sophie."

He pressed a kiss to her hand and then released it. Gustav grabbed Sophie and drug her away as her mind reeled from the vampire's greeting. Away from Alexander, Gustav began berating Sophie, but she didn't hear him. Looking in Alexander's direction, she shivered slightly in the wake of his words. Their encounters had been few and far between as she got older. The charity consumed much of her time and Uncle Gustav felt Sophie would best help them through research instead of field work. Hearing the affectionate term roll off his tongue once more left her shaken. Unwelcome, the memory of her time as a vampire rose up in her mind once more. Although she remained silent about it, she often dreamed of her time at the castle as Alexander's protege.

Claiming she had to attend to some official duties, Sophie escaped Gustav's tirade. What had he expected? Sophie though in irritation. Whatever they knew about Alexander Lucard the world perceived him as a world class entrepreneur to be respected and courted. She harbored no illusions that Alexander was there for charitable reasons, doubtless he was there to be seen and get Lucard Industries in the newspapers, but the money he gave would help sick children the same as if it came from a mortal man. It was frustrating at times the way Uncle Gustav was so focused that he couldn't see the realities of the world.

Forcing a smile and mingling, Sophie found her eyes drawn to Alexander. His date was pretty, but Sophie felt no real envy beyond being able to enjoy the blonde vampire's company without being scolded. A parade of women passed through his life, but none stayed for long. Sometimes Sophie imagined that Alexander was very lonely underneath the cool mask he presented to the world. However, maybe she was projecting her own loneliness, she decided. Although she dated some and Chris still was interested in her even now that they were both adults, she never felt connected to any of the men she dated. The only true connection she'd ever felt was when she had lived at the castle and Alexander had been with her.

"Soph!" Chris called out to her.

Turning she saw him beaming and flourishing a sprig of mistletoe. Smiling awkwardly, Sophie gave him a helpless look and darted away. Eventually she would be forced to tell her friend that she never would see him as anything but a friend, but she didn't want to hurt him any sooner than she had to. Slipping away from the crowded ballroom, Sophie made her way outside. Wandering through the hotel's garden, she found a bench nestled among some shrubbery that hid her from the hotel's view. She looked up at the sky and sighed. At one time she felt a part of the heavens, another shimmering star in the velvet night. No longer though, she sighed.

Her view was blocked as a figure moved into view. Too tall to be Chris, Sophie blinked a moment in the darkness as she tried to identify the intruder. Then just as her eyesight began to focus, the expensive custom cologne that haunted her dreams wafted around her.

"Mr. Lucard."

"So formal, my darling Sophie?" he inquired lightly and took a seat beside her. "You used to call me Alexander."

"Only when I was a vampire. I shouldn't use it now, it-" Sophie trailed off and looked away.

Alexander's hand caressed her cheek as he murmured in a soft but serious tone, "It seems so intimate. You shouldn't use it because it hurts to remember?"

Swallowing nervously, she turned to him and nodded. It was the first time she had been truly alone with him in a long time. Although she'd seen him since her time as a vampire, it was always with Chris or Max or Uncle Gustav in tow. Walls she'd carefully constructed around her heart seemed to crumble. Her lower lip quivered slightly and she felt her eyes fill with tears she'd held back for so long.

"Yes, it hurts," Sophie confessed.

"Sophie."

"It hurts, Alexander," she conceded. Looking at him sadly, she asked, "Is that what you wanted? To hear me admit how much it hurts? To tell you that not one day goes by that I don't think of my time at the castle? Or did you want more from me? Shall I tell you how I used to look out my window night after night and wonder why you didn't come for me?"

"I wanted to. You don't know how many times I came close to throwing pebbles at your window like a school boy and begging you to come out of your ivory tower," he told her, his hands holding her face gently. "I couldn't do it. Every time I was about to crawl to you on my knees, I would panic. It was better to dream about you agreeing to come away with me one day rather than knowing you were lost to me forever. Would you have come away with me?"

Looking away, Sophie answered, "I don't know, Alexander."

"I came out because I have a little present for you," he said and withdrew a small sprig of greenery from his jacket. As he pressed it into her palm Sophie blinked in confusion. Gently he explained, "I relieved young Christopher of his mistletoe and put the suggestion in his mind that he was tired and should go home."

A smile crossed her face as she looked at the small piece of crushed mistletoe in her hand and thanked him, "Thank you. I didn't know how much longer I could avoid him. I know I'll have to tell him it's hopeless one day but I keep putting it off hoping he'll figure it out on his own."

"I fear that isn't likely my dear," he told her and pushed the mistletoe with his finger tip. His face was near Sophie's as he mused, "It's rather ironic that mortals kiss under a plant known as the vampire plant."

Turning to him, Sophie murmured, "I guess we're just drawn to vampires."

"Are you?"

"Yes, Alexander."

As she said his name it came out soft and breathless. His arms wrapped around her and drew her close to him. Sophie offered no resistance as Alexander pulled her against him and shyly placed her hands on his shoulders. Nervously she realized he was going to kiss her and closed her eyes. As his lips brushed hers, Sophie's hands slid from Alexander's shoulders and wrapped around him. The kiss was slow an unhurried as the vampire probed her mouth with his tongue and teased her mouth with his. One kiss slid into another and another as Sophie surrendered to the sweet torment Alexander's mouth wrought. Soon she was twisting in his embrace, eager for more contact and moaning against his mouth.

Never before had any kiss affected her so powerfully. His hands slid over her body and explored setting off wave after wave of sensations. When Alexander finally lifted his face from hers, Sophie's breath was coming in short gasps. Caressing her throat with his hand he leaned forward and replaced his fingers with his mouth. Sophie was dimly aware she should stop him, but made no move to. A brief sting told her he was drinking from her, but Sophie heard his voice and allowed him to drink from her.

"Only a taste," he promised. Mentally adding for now.

In his mouth, Sophie's blood was warm and intoxicating. Her rising pleasure adding to his enjoyment of her blood, Alexander drank slowly, prolonging their mutual enjoyment. Given Sophie's sheltered life and what her blood told him, he knew she was new to physical pleasure. The scent of her arousal clung softly in the air and he felt a surge of pride knowing he was the first man to ever awaken her desire. Sophie began to tremble in his arms and whimpered as she found release. Gently withdrawing his fangs, Alexander kissed her neck, sealing the two small punctures.

"Come away with me, Sophie," Alexander commanded softly.

Sophie knew she should refuse but she couldn't find the words. For the first time in many year she felt alive. In the distance the sound of Gustav's voice intruded on their interlude. Nodding dazedly, Sophie agreed, "Yes. Take me with you, Alexander."

Standing slowly, Alexander wrapped his arms around Sophie once more. A moment later, Gustav walked into that section of the garden as the fog rose up from the ground and floated away on the night wind. The only trace of the lovers was a piece of mistletoe on the bench. Assuming Sophie was still safely inside, Gustav went to look for her. While her guardian was oblivious, Alexander and Sophie materialized inside the castle...
