'97 Dodge Caravan 170,000 miles $600 + my broken Subaru. Needs front tires, rear hatch fixed (backed into something) has rust on both sliding doors, hangers for gas tank, other repairs? Drives well on city streets (too late in the day for highway test)Will have mechanic look at it next week

It really depends on what your mechanic says. If he thinks he can do the repairs this car needs (and that it is not likely to need more any time soon) for less than the repairs yours would need, it might be a good bet.
