Still no power on our side of the neighborhood pond...
The houses across the lake have electricity restored, but out side of the neighborhood is still dark. They're swearing they will have power on for us by midnight tonight ... we'll see.
Even when we get power back, we won't have internet. Spectrum is notoriously slow, too, so there's no telling how long I'm going to have to go sit at Starbucks half the day to get my posting done ...
At least we live in South Carolina. The mountains of North Carolina have cities that are just gone, wiped off the face of the earth by the little rivers they'd optimistically built their homes and businesses next to. Yes, there's a reason they call all that nice, flat land a flood plain, but nobody has seen flooding this damaging in ... well, since Noah's time. The mountains don't get hurricanes ... but they did this time. So far, 200 confirmed deaths, but there are many, many people in North Carolina missing. Some may never be found because the rivers are still raging, making it impossible to get to some of the bodies and impossible to locate others.
I have to be thankful that I'm only deprived of electricity and internet access. My house was not badly damaged. The back porch can be replaced and I don't think the roof and sidings were terribly hurt, though I'm going to get the insurance adjustor out here to double check everything. We didn't lose any trees from our yard so clean-up will be minimal once we get the porch cleared away.
So, for now, everything is as OK as it can be during a natural disaster. I have friends with electricity where I can go wash clothes and get hot food. Many of the nearby businesses are open so if we have the $$, we can go out to eat. And I can get WiFi at Starbucks. We'll survive... but nobody is going to forget any time soon.
