Jamie dropped his stack of books heavily on the table, looking down at Maurycy's inquisitive face. "You, little thing. You're a lot o' trouble," he said, affection betraying his mock-annoyance. He settled into his chair with the top book of the stack, Animals In Translation. Maurycy squeaked and popped up into his lap unconcernedly, curling up to snooze as Jamie read.
They didn't spend long like this, though, before Geoff came struggling though the front door with too many carrier bags. Jamie set the kitten on the floor out of the way and went to help Geoff, scolding him gently for carrying too much at once.
"Oh, more kitten research?" Geoff came over to check out Jamie's books when they had the groceries put away. "I don't think you really need it. You're a good kitten dad."
"I'm just not sure. I want to do things right. Besides, this stuff is interesting."
They both watched Maurycy as she darted back and forth, under the sofa and out again, rolling as she tackled invisible enemies. "Weird little creature."
"That is apparently normal," Jamie informed him, and they grinned at each other at the idea that anyone in their house was. Geoff found a bit of string to dangle for Maurycy, Jamie curled up on the sofa to read, and the evening passed much like any other.
