It's bound to come to a head sometime. Dom himself is so mired in confusion and confabulations that the prospect of broaching the subject is laughable. Billy's angle isn't perfect, but his approach is head-on.

"You've got some serious issues," he says, in response to some sharp remark of Dom's.

"Damn straight," says Dom. It is not the ideal comeback, but it's what he's got on short notice.

Billy stares at him, then narrows his eyes and speaks slowly - whether rehearsed or mid-logic, Dom cannot tell. "You're not going t' stop me being nice to you by being prickly. I've already made up my mind about you, Dom, and I'll thank you to not try changing it."

A rush of heat - anger - floods through Dominic, crumpling him in on himself. To his utter chagrin, his rage has pushed him near to tears, and he wants to hide, hide, away from clever friends with reaching hands.

"Don't touch me," he sobs, when Billy has come close enough to exude the poisonous scent of hope. "Don't touch me, don't touch me..."

"Oh, my Dommie. That's what it is, isn't it." Billy is gathering Dom close, holding him through cloth and hostility. "I'm sorry. It's been so bad for you, hasn't it, I'm so sorry." He rocks them forward and back, and a hug is a comfort for the first time in many years.

"How do you know me, when I..? I was trying so hard to not invite anyone in."

"Well, you were still you, weren't you. No matter what you're pretending."

Dom grunts thoughtfully. He is letting Billy pet his hair with Dom's gloves on.

"I couldn't have been sure of you, though, if you hadn't confirmed it for me pretty consistently."

"So you were, like, testing out a theory?"

"A hypothesis maybe. I'm not a mind reader, you know."

"Good. 'Cause that would make gift shopping for you very tedious."

Billy laughs delightedly. He leans down and says, "Please let me see you from now on. Like this. You have no idea how tiring it is to second-guess every last thing."

"Ugh. You'd be surprised."

Dom does not intend to make any such promise. Particularly not with the dangerous portion of his secret still under wraps. But he's lost his momentum for shoving this friend away. It's his actions Billy's been paying attention to, anyway.

Work has been very difficult for Dominic. He’s not absolutely sure, but he guesses the only person more uncomfortable is their Gimli, whose skin is actually coming off.

He knows it’s getting to people. His makeup artist and prosthetics appliers wear gloves, but they can’t be careful all the time. He’s heard the shaky little indrawn breaths that mean a knuckle brushes his neck and some talented crewperson is sucked into his personal vortex.

Edging firmly into paranoid territory, Dom feels certain that Elijah is flinging himself off cliffs in his off hours to recapture the feeling from tumbling into the Hobbit pile first thing in shooting.

The thing of it is, if Billy knew he thought this way, he’d probably laugh. Say he was making a doomsday scenario out of it.

Dom’s been having a daydream lately of sitting Billy down and telling him everything. He’s forgetting his hundreds of reasons why that’s a terrible, dangerous idea. Level the playing field a bit (treacherous thoughts slip free). If Billy’s feelings are already skewed, doesn’t it make sense to make it - if not fair, at least less unfair?

If he tells Billy, will he think Dom’s a loony, demand proof, or simply factor it in? Nothing’s that simple.
