I went to work at the trap-neuter-return program run by Alley Cat Allies. Fifty six cats were spayed/neutered over the course of just a few hours! I got to carry the still-anesthetized cats back into their traps post-surgery, so they could be brought back to their colonies later. Holding an anesthetized cat is interesting. It’s cool because you get to participate in the entire process, from strapping the females belly-up and paws splayed to these plastic boards (which is really creepy because it makes it look like they’re being strapped to torture devices) to the actual surgery (which is performed by vets, of course, but you assist them during the operations, passing them tools and such…you just can’t be too squeamish because you’re gonna be looking at some innards, as well as some blood) to working what I refer to as the L’Oreal Makeup Room (where you groom them, dig all the mites out of their ears, etc. while they’re still unconscious) to bringing them back into their traps after surgery and keeping an eye on them to make sure they’re recovering without complications.

They do look rather morgue-like, don’t they? They’re just ID tags, they ensure that the cat gets returned to the correct colony afterward. Hope things are well in the Mayan kingdom!
