I support both of their goals... But I generallly avoid joining highly organized groups.

I am not a *member* of the ACLU, because I do not like some of the things they do. However, I subscribe to their mailing list and find them to be a very useful tool.

I am a member of multiple firearms organizations.

I generally support the ACLU but sometimes they exhibit total butball behavior so I'm not a member. I'm not a member of the NRA because while I support their goals, I haven't actually learned to shoot a firearm yet. :)

That was supposed to be "total nutball behavior," but I kinda like "total buttball hehavior," too. ;)

It's not a requirement of joining. I plan on joining as soon I get my first check, though I've yet to buy a firearm.

True enough. I'm also just not a big joiner, though--I am very wary of associating myself with a large vocal group whose PR/marketing/image I have no control over. :)

I'm betting Michael Moore is.

...but I've thought about it. If the ACLU changed its view on the 2nd Amendment, I might just end up joining.

And I suspect a bunch of other gun owners might, also.

It clearly hasn't ever dawned on the ACLU leadership that if they'd come to their senses on firearm rights, they could probably partner with the NRA on a lot of issues and truely steamroller Congress.

True, but their members are slowly finding alliances with each other, especially on issues like retirement and social security, the PATRIOT ACT, and the like.
