Every time I wonder what motivation I could muster for strength training, I just remember a very nice but misguided NRA instructor telling me, "you can put it down if it's too heavy

I am always thoroughly confused about the whole "letting" each other do things. I mean, it makes me look like Significant Other of the Year compared to a lot of other people, but I just don't understand it.
That instructor was probably just being practical. It takes a lot more strength than most people realize to hold up a gun for long periods. Students who get tired start shaking, and then they get frustrated and it's hard to diagnose anything else they might be doing. Or they might be doing everything else right.
So one of the things instructors learn is to let students take frequent breaks, and encourage them to do exercises with their rifles after the class is over so that it becomes easier to handle.
The basic rule of thumb is that you should be able to hold the gun out to the side, arm fully extended, for one minute.
He wasn't just being practical, unless he was just being practical with me. There were two other students in the class (it was shotgun), and he had me "resting" every 5 seconds. Seriously.
I'm not taking it personally either. I would simply like to show people that I am capable of doing it.
Strength is good. Helpful in many situations, not just holding a gun. ;)
I once dated a woman that I took shooting a few times. Then when I wanted to go shooting with some friends, and she said something to the effect of, "but shooting is OUR thing!" Seriously, can you believe that shit? Your hypothetical "she lets me" is kinda common, from what I see amongst some friends/acquaintainces. :(
