Identity and home

Californian Asians have attempted to draw me out before. When I evinced no interest in their exclusionary activities and showed no sympathy towards their cliqueish mentality, I was accused of being whitewashed. I finally realized that my feeling of distate stemmed from the simple fact that I was not like them at all. We did not share a similar ( Read more... )

Psh, you can't talk, you abandoner. You want to go to Phoenix for all the "young people" there. That's like going to Alaska for all the sunshine.

You know, Kate, one of the things I love most about you is how much you make me appreciate the midwest. Of course, it's also helping make me homesick, but I'll deal.

Indeed, I even wrote a little diatribe about it in a thread on the Denmark community today. I'm loving me some midwest.

Of course, I would hate the midwest right now if it weren't for air conditioning. Ah, sweet sweet air conditioning. I was talking with perial last night about how the beastly midwest weather can be a good thing sometimes. For example, if you don't live in an air conditioned house (which I never did from the time I left home until I moved to Denmark), the beastly summer weather can be a good excuse to stay late at work, or to go to the dollar-movie theater all day on a weekend. Or to go visit friends with air conditioning. :)

I read through that thread. Very, very interesting reading, and I highly applaud your points.

It seems to me that, once again, cultural relativism is not taken into account. One poster speaks disparagingly about America "not having any distinct culture". Well, he's speaking as a Dane. To him, a "distinct culture" means one that has deep ethnic roots. I think America has an extremely distinct culture - like every other country in the world. Countries are formed, after all, because they feel themselves to be different enough to warrant a separate government, a separate nation, and a separate people. America's culture just happens to be composed of various other ones. (On that point, though, it shocks me how little Europeans know about American culture. To them, our culture is Hollywood and Disneyland. If only they could actually go to a small town in the Midwest or a big city in the South or a bohemian enclave in the Northeast. They're really unaware of how many different cultures there are, and not just along ethnic or ( ... )
