So had my annual review with the boss today and he told me that once more I get a exceeds expectations because well, I am awesome and stuff :). I'm kinda going the opposite direction. Looking for work in Cali now that I have a huge student loan debt and the skills to get into the field I want.
You have to remember that in the country not around friends you will likely find yourself around closed minded type people. A home on lots of land at the cost of being open about who you are is not a good tradeoff.
heh. I know Im not being much help. Just resonates with me as it has hit on my thought processes since leaving everything for one year to go to a school.

On the other hand, I know quite a few back-to-the-land types who transitioned from urban professional types of careers to... *gasp*... raising goats or chickens or cows or making wine or growing lettuce. I can't really see you doing something like that, though!

I definitely think you should get your own place. Land you already own and having the support of family nearby is certainly a plus.
On the other hand, I do have 2.5 acres of land in Oregon with a cleared home site and septic approval for sale to the right buyer. ;)
Good luck in your decision making. I'm sure you'll make the right choice after you consider all your options. A pros/cons list is often helpful in these situations.
