A fork in the road

So had my annual review with the boss today and he told me that once more I get a exceeds expectations because well, I am awesome and stuff :). So I took the time to tell him of some of my plans and wants and my future here at the company. I explained that to reach the goals I have for myself I either need to live somewhere cheaper or make a lot ( Read more... )

While I also want a nice bit of land in the country I have come to the conclusion that having friends nearby is the most important thing. I miss OK not because the state was so fun but because I had friends there.

I'm kinda going the opposite direction. Looking for work in Cali now that I have a huge student loan debt and the skills to get into the field I want.

You have to remember that in the country not around friends you will likely find yourself around closed minded type people. A home on lots of land at the cost of being open about who you are is not a good tradeoff.

heh. I know Im not being much help. Just resonates with me as it has hit on my thought processes since leaving everything for one year to go to a school.

And you make some really good points so I am glad you say these things because its things like this I might not think of when trying to decide.

Isn't that basically what Bigpaws and Hawse did? Both of them had some regrets about it from what I recall, but there are tradeoffs for everything.

On the other hand, I know quite a few back-to-the-land types who transitioned from urban professional types of careers to... *gasp*... raising goats or chickens or cows or making wine or growing lettuce. I can't really see you doing something like that, though!

Congrats on your review. No surprise to me!

I definitely think you should get your own place. Land you already own and having the support of family nearby is certainly a plus.

On the other hand, I do have 2.5 acres of land in Oregon with a cleared home site and septic approval for sale to the right buyer. ;)

Good luck in your decision making. I'm sure you'll make the right choice after you consider all your options. A pros/cons list is often helpful in these situations.

You first might want more information on working remotely. They may be willing to do it, but only if you will be within a distance to come in, in person for certain problems or such. Even if you are allowed to be far enough away to move to another state, will there be mandatory in person meetings you will have to travel to for checkups and if so, how often. I'd try to see if you can get more details from them about what they can do before making any solid plans. Find out just what can be done.
