Great excuse to watch lots of Morgana clips. the future seemed so bright, Gwen/Morgana and the sad development of their relationship in season 2&3 One of Us, Gwen/Morgana Harbor, Gwen/everyone. Excellent excuse to watch lots of Gwen clips, and I love how her relationship with everyone is shown. Live for You, gen Gwaine Obsession According to You, Merlin/Arthur, Merlin/Gwaine, and fits them painfully well too Love to Have a Beer with Gwaine, Gwaine, Merlin, Arthur, Lancelot, Gaius (and how I love Goblin!Gaius!) may be crazy, Merlin/Gwaine Both^^ Oh, what did I get myself into?, Gwen/Gwaine, and they're adorable beyond words. Other The Knights Of The Hot Table: what it says in the tin. Yum. Paradise Circus, Morgana/Morgause. These two are just so... ngh. Love them. Arthur Pendragon - Hot Mess Arthur/everyone Crack for Merlin Addicts: Vivian! Sir William! Shirtless!Arthur! Smirking!Morgana! It's great. Warning for season 3 spoilers It's Impossible to Ignore You, everyone/everyone. Completely adorable. The Lusty Month Of May, everyone/everyone crack High School Never Ends Merlin-centric hints at a few pairings but not romance-centric, funny Hope Dangles On A String, Arthur and his relationship with Morgana, Gwen, Merlin I Sucked A Lot Of Cock To Get Where I Am; Merlin/everyone (well, everyone with a cock). And it's amazing (and disturbing and hilarious) how well it suggests the Merlin/everyone with just a few scenes. <3 Friend Like Me, with Merlin as the Genie which... is really fitting, actually. I originally got this from another rec, which said that it's at can your friends do this? that it gets really brilliant, and I agree. Be Our Guest. The assemblage of all the shoots of people eating or drinking throughout the series are pretty funny on their own (especially when they don't quite fit with the festive mood of the song...) Hakuna Matata. Merlin as Timon, Arthur as Pumba, and Lancelot as Simba. It all works. XD Popular: Merlin/Everyone. The one scene in 1x10 where Merlin evades an arrow already looked ridiculous, but now I'll never be able to watch it without thinking about the dancing at the disco. So yeah. <3 Lupin III, Merlin, Arthur, Gwen, Morgana, but mainly Merlin; it's a little confusing when you don't know Lupin III, but you still get the gist of it, which is Merlin as a thief. It works really well too. Blinding, some Gwen/Lancelot & Morgana/Arthur, general angst She's a Rebel!, Morgause being badass A Woman's Touch, Nimueh, Morgana, Morgause (and Gwen, but just for a few moments) Handlebars: addresses some of the darker and more questionable parts of the show in an awesome way!

Showcasing all the epicness of this show (ESPECIALLY KARA'S) and just making it look almost ten times more epic than it actually was. Except, in between some lameness and eye-rolling-ness and fail it really was that epic. And I'll always love it for that. LotS - Kahlan Amnell - Invincible. Hot damn, if you ever needed a reminder that Kahlan is a BAMF, this is the vid to watch. With magic or without, this woman is ruthless and amazing. GoT - Sansa Stark - Waking World. While reading through the ASoIaF books, I'm realizing that Sansa is very much the character I identify with. Her journey from naivete to despair (and a badassery of her own) is neatly showcased in this vid with a perfect song choice. Doctor Who - Team TARDIS - You always make me smile. The cast of Doctor Who being adorkable and awesome. So much love <3 <3 <3 LotS - Cara/Kahlan - Kiss me, take me. Have I never recced this before? Despite the use of vid manips (though scorchingly hot ones), this vid does a great job at showing how sizzling these two's chemistry was. I miss them so much.

[x] justhuman | Insta-Rec - Whitecollar Vid: I had my reservations, but mouthmount pulls off Handlebars by the Flobots for White Collar. Having seen the Doctor Who version by Lithium Doll, I was leery. While the Doctor version will remain the best one ever done to that song, Neal Caffrey really does do it with No Handlbars. Just like the Who version, the song recasts the show in a darker light. The big exception here is that with who it was more a reversal of image and with White Collar it is the underbelly of the show - the side that often is hid by Neal's brilliant smile. By the second half of the vid, the focus widens to other characters that are playing fast and loose. Set aside the expectations you may have had and watch from the White Collar pov. (But yes - if you haven't seen the Doctor Who version, watch the White Collar one first and then google up the Who version.)

I am neither a Smallville person nor really a vid person, but I stumbled across this (whose relevance to my interests will become obvious as you watch) and NOW I MUST TELL YOU ALL. Because it is GLORIOUS. The kryptonite unicorns show up maybe a third of the way through, and it only gets better from there. Folks totally unfamiliar with Smallville and/or DC comics media may want to read this handy reaction post, which clued me in to a couple of details and also clarified exactly how cracked out this vid is. [x] lailoken | Vid: The Price: So I watched this video, called The Price by thingswithwings . It was very interesting, and was preceded by my reading thingswithwings 's description of manpain. Basically speaking, my life totally sucks because of all these terrible things that have happened to people so my life sucks and it's all my fault and did I mention my life sucks.. In other words, being a man with power sucks. Did I mention it sucks? Okay, so the video basically goes through a whole bunch of TV shows and movies that include moments where terrible things happen to the Not Main Character, but the camera still focuses on the main character, because it is He Has a Sucky Life. There was a fair amount of Doctor Who in there, particularly with Ten; and one moment of those I'm not sure I agree with-when the Doctor and Rose are separated in parallel universes, and they're both pressing their faces against a wall. Admittedly, the Doctor's pain and Rose's pain are slightly different in that scene-the Doctor is thinking not only that he's lost someone he loves but also probably that he's gone and screwed up someone's life again; and Rose is thinking that she's lost someone that she loves, and her chance at adventure. I'm not sure this should fully qualify as manpain, but what do I know ... I'm not an expert. Anyway, it got me thinking about why all these manpain tropes exist in the first place. Why do we have this fascination with the poor hero who doesn't know who he is, who often does terrible things (or at least suffers) for the good of mankind? It's compelling, certainly, but why? I don't really know, but part of it, I think, has to do with the facts that 1) most of these characters are male, 2) they usually conform to masculine things, 3) they have just done something terrible, so 4) their tears (or sadfaces) must be earned even more than the tears of a woman. In other words, if a man is crying, he must be really hurting. (Unless it's for comedy, obviously, but that's a whole different story.) No idea if that will make any sense when I wake up tomorrow morning. But it is interesting to think about. (One tiny gripe about the whole concept of manpain. First, these are all stories with protagonists, so of course the pain is going to be emphasized and focused on the protagonist. This is especially true in something like Harry Potter, where the entire work is written from a single point of view (excluding prologue chapters). This makes a little hyped up manpain on the part of the protagonist acceptable to me, at least; but having the entire story revolve around it, as in the death of Renee Walker on 24, is not acceptable.)

[x] Not that there's anything wrong with that - Danger: pretty boys ahead: If you've never watched an episode of The Professionals, or perhaps watched one or two but wondered what all the fuss was about, this is a brilliant pimping vid. At the very least you'll understand why the fandom has been going strong for over 30 years now. I love this vid. Great mateship moments abound, set to a terrific atmospheric song. The vidder, bodiecuddle, made it as a gen, friendship vid - but Pros is a show that slashes itself. Make up your own mind on this one.

[x] aerintine | Vid Recs: Sharpen Your Teeth: HELL (ensemble) - pretty dang funny - although the vidder spends an eyebrow-raising amount of time focusing on Damon's Tummy Dance (you know the one) - but still. Well done. Till the World Ends (ensemble) - I usually find freeze frames/clip effects like this cheesy, but this vidder does a great job with them. The best part is the final clip: GRRUMPH! *WHUFF* Cracked me up. Holding a Heart (Forwood) - We really need some new episodes because I keep seeing the same Forwood vid over and over. This one plays on very familiar themes, but good golly they're fab, these two kids. This is War (ensemble) - approximately 4000 vidders have done this song with this show. The drek is deep. BUT THIS ONE. This one is excellent. The labeling is completely on-point. I Failed You (Elena) - all of Elena's parental figures. I got choked up. Numb (Elena & Katherine) - I love how this vid highlights all the parallels between the Petrova doppelgangers My Serious Vampire Look (Stefan) - short, adorbs Stefan vidlet. I dare you not to fall for him just a little. Tainted Love (Brothers/Defan/Stamon, whatev) - I was looking for good Brothers material when I happened across this. It... made me blush. More than once. These clever vidders and their manips, I swear.

When I'm through with you, there won't be anything left. - I've never seen an episode of Damages in my life. So what makes this one different? (Hint: it's not just that the version is only 2:57 long.) If you haven't heard this cover of the song before, it's ... well, haunting, is one way to describe it. It's an a capella version and somehow that fits perfectly here. It's intense and breathy and you can practically feel the ache in Dean's heart through the song. The video does a beautiful job tracing Dean's journey back from hell and his struggles to find out who he is now, where he fits in the world after what he's been through, and how to make sense of how the world has changed in his absence. This is a Dean caught between Heaven and Hell - between Castiel and Ruby, between the Sam he knows and the Sam who hides things from him. This is a Dean who wants--desperately--but doesn't seem to know exactly what he's searching for. It's a striking piece of work with a really effective song choice. Don't pass it by just because the song's been over-used. It's well worth three minutes of your time.

For those who aren't familiar with the original series, I suggest clicking on the LJ entry and scrolling to the bottom to watch a video of the original series credits--that will give you an idea of exactly how much thought went into this vid, as the vidder recreated (as closely as possible) many of the scenes from the S&S credits. It's just a delight to watch, and honestly, Simon & Simon had one of the best theme songs on TV. Give it a listen - it might be more familiar than you think! [x] the song sustains its own consciousness - Finally: VVC Vid Rec: Bright Star: the vid that's most settled into me was kiki_miserychic's challenge vid, Bright Star. I haven't seen the source text (Jane Campion's film of the same name), though now I absolutely want to watch it. But I do know Jane Campion, and loosely the story of Keats (well, I know that he died at 25!) And that is enough to know for this vid. Or rather, you don't need to know Jane Campion, but one of the things I love so much about this vid is the way it plays with and makes the most of Campion's lyrical, expressive way of communicating a moment through an image. In the first section of this vid, the intercutting is just to die for. I want to watch it over and over and over. I love how the rhythmic editing combined with the music almost changes the way you breathe--or perhaps it does change the way you breathe. I love the parallel imagery of them both (seemingly?) lying prostrate as their romance takes them over, and how we start with her processing her meeting of him, but we increasingly get these images that suggest that he's caught in something more unruly than their romance (depression/melancholy and disease, from what I know of Keats...). And by the end of that first section, we are bound into him too with that beautiful imagery of him entwined in the flowers--and now I must watch the film to find out what the context for that image is. Is it simply the tree from a different angle? Or is it a field of flowers? Either way, it's such an essentially Campion image and I love the way it holds so much meaning in the arc of this vid. After that the editing gets more subtle, but equally compelling and exact. I love the elegance and precision of the editing throughout, as their affair and fate and eventually his illness take them over, and I love how, throughout the second portion of the vid, images of their connection to each other (that beautiful long take of them holding hands) are intertwined with images of words and writing. And finally I love how this vid is so fittingly poetic in feel given its subject matter. Oh and that moment when she collapses into the purple flowers. Perfect. Perfectly visual and musical.

Game of Thrones Thistle and Weeds by sisabet DANY. Wow, this blew me away and actually made me cry, it's just so intense. This is Dany's story, through all of season 1. [This is Game of Thrones and Dany, so expect sexual violence, other kinds of violence, and nudity.] Smallville I Swear by dualbunny, greensilver, and sweetestdrain I think this is actually the crackiest thing I have ever seen. :D Up May I Suggest by absolutedestiny I didn't even like the movie because I found it too sad. But I'm a glutton for punishment, so of course I had to watch the vid that people keep saying made them cry. If anything, the vid is more emotional than the movie, but since it doesn't drag things out for an entire movie, I actually think it works better. It made me cry my eyes out, but it's stunningly beautiful too. Stargate (SG-1, SGA, and a bit of SGU) High Voltage by kuwdora Dense and rich look at the Ancients in Stargate. There's a lot going on here and I especially like how we see the impact of both direct contact with the ancients and the effects of all the technology they left behind for people to stumble over. Man, the Ancients were fuckers.

Hot damn, if you ever needed a reminder that Kahlan is a BAMF, this is the vid to watch. With magic or without, this woman is ruthless and amazing. GoT - Sansa Stark - Waking World. While reading through the ASoIaF books, I'm realizing that Sansa is very much the character I identify with. Her journey from naivete to despair (and a badassery of her own) is neatly showcased in this vid with a perfect song choice. Doctor Who - Team TARDIS - You always make me smile. The cast of Doctor Who being adorkable and awesome. So much love <3 <3 <3 LotS - Cara/Kahlan - Kiss me, take me. Have I never recced this before? Despite the use of vid manips (though scorchingly hot ones), this vid does a great job at showing how sizzling these two's chemistry was. I miss them so much.

[x] justhuman | Insta-Rec - Whitecollar Vid: I had my reservations, but mouthmount pulls off Handlebars by the Flobots for White Collar. Having seen the Doctor Who version by Lithium Doll, I was leery. While the Doctor version will remain the best one ever done to that song, Neal Caffrey really does do it with No Handlbars. Just like the Who version, the song recasts the show in a darker light. The big exception here is that with who it was more a reversal of image and with White Collar it is the underbelly of the show - the side that often is hid by Neal's brilliant smile. By the second half of the vid, the focus widens to other characters that are playing fast and loose. Set aside the expectations you may have had and watch from the White Collar pov. (But yes - if you haven't seen the Doctor Who version, watch the White Collar one first and then google up the Who version.)

[x] lailoken | Vid: The Price: So I watched this video, called The Price by thingswithwings . It was very interesting, and was preceded by my reading thingswithwings 's description of manpain. Basically speaking, my life totally sucks because of all these terrible things that have happened to people so my life sucks and it's all my fault and did I mention my life sucks.. In other words, being a man with power sucks. Did I mention it sucks? Okay, so the video basically goes through a whole bunch of TV shows and movies that include moments where terrible things happen to the Not Main Character, but the camera still focuses on the main character, because it is He Has a Sucky Life. There was a fair amount of Doctor Who in there, particularly with Ten; and one moment of those I'm not sure I agree with-when the Doctor and Rose are separated in parallel universes, and they're both pressing their faces against a wall. Admittedly, the Doctor's pain and Rose's pain are slightly different in that scene-the Doctor is thinking not only that he's lost someone he loves but also probably that he's gone and screwed up someone's life again; and Rose is thinking that she's lost someone that she loves, and her chance at adventure. I'm not sure this should fully qualify as manpain, but what do I know ... I'm not an expert. Anyway, it got me thinking about why all these manpain tropes exist in the first place. Why do we have this fascination with the poor hero who doesn't know who he is, who often does terrible things (or at least suffers) for the good of mankind? It's compelling, certainly, but why? I don't really know, but part of it, I think, has to do with the facts that 1) most of these characters are male, 2) they usually conform to masculine things, 3) they have just done something terrible, so 4) their tears (or sadfaces) must be earned even more than the tears of a woman. In other words, if a man is crying, he must be really hurting. (Unless it's for comedy, obviously, but that's a whole different story.) No idea if that will make any sense when I wake up tomorrow morning. But it is interesting to think about. (One tiny gripe about the whole concept of manpain. First, these are all stories with protagonists, so of course the pain is going to be emphasized and focused on the protagonist. This is especially true in something like Harry Potter, where the entire work is written from a single point of view (excluding prologue chapters). This makes a little hyped up manpain on the part of the protagonist acceptable to me, at least; but having the entire story revolve around it, as in the death of Renee Walker on 24, is not acceptable.)

[x] Not that there's anything wrong with that - Danger: pretty boys ahead: If you've never watched an episode of The Professionals, or perhaps watched one or two but wondered what all the fuss was about, this is a brilliant pimping vid. At the very least you'll understand why the fandom has been going strong for over 30 years now. I love this vid. Great mateship moments abound, set to a terrific atmospheric song. The vidder, bodiecuddle, made it as a gen, friendship vid - but Pros is a show that slashes itself. Make up your own mind on this one.

BUT THIS ONE. This one is excellent. The labeling is completely on-point. I Failed You (Elena) - all of Elena's parental figures. I got choked up. Numb (Elena & Katherine) - I love how this vid highlights all the parallels between the Petrova doppelgangers My Serious Vampire Look (Stefan) - short, adorbs Stefan vidlet. I dare you not to fall for him just a little. Tainted Love (Brothers/Defan/Stamon, whatev) - I was looking for good Brothers material when I happened across this. It... made me blush. More than once. These clever vidders and their manips, I swear.

So what makes this one different? (Hint: it's not just that the version is only 2:57 long.) If you haven't heard this cover of the song before, it's ... well, haunting, is one way to describe it. It's an a capella version and somehow that fits perfectly here. It's intense and breathy and you can practically feel the ache in Dean's heart through the song. The video does a beautiful job tracing Dean's journey back from hell and his struggles to find out who he is now, where he fits in the world after what he's been through, and how to make sense of how the world has changed in his absence. This is a Dean caught between Heaven and Hell - between Castiel and Ruby, between the Sam he knows and the Sam who hides things from him. This is a Dean who wants--desperately--but doesn't seem to know exactly what he's searching for. It's a striking piece of work with a really effective song choice. Don't pass it by just because the song's been over-used. It's well worth three minutes of your time.

I haven't seen the source text (Jane Campion's film of the same name), though now I absolutely want to watch it. But I do know Jane Campion, and loosely the story of Keats (well, I know that he died at 25!) And that is enough to know for this vid. Or rather, you don't need to know Jane Campion, but one of the things I love so much about this vid is the way it plays with and makes the most of Campion's lyrical, expressive way of communicating a moment through an image. In the first section of this vid, the intercutting is just to die for. I want to watch it over and over and over. I love how the rhythmic editing combined with the music almost changes the way you breathe--or perhaps it does change the way you breathe. I love the parallel imagery of them both (seemingly?) lying prostrate as their romance takes them over, and how we start with her processing her meeting of him, but we increasingly get these images that suggest that he's caught in something more unruly than their romance (depression/melancholy and disease, from what I know of Keats...). And by the end of that first section, we are bound into him too with that beautiful imagery of him entwined in the flowers--and now I must watch the film to find out what the context for that image is. Is it simply the tree from a different angle? Or is it a field of flowers? Either way, it's such an essentially Campion image and I love the way it holds so much meaning in the arc of this vid. After that the editing gets more subtle, but equally compelling and exact. I love the elegance and precision of the editing throughout, as their affair and fate and eventually his illness take them over, and I love how, throughout the second portion of the vid, images of their connection to each other (that beautiful long take of them holding hands) are intertwined with images of words and writing. And finally I love how this vid is so fittingly poetic in feel given its subject matter. Oh and that moment when she collapses into the purple flowers. Perfect. Perfectly visual and musical.

Game of Thrones Thistle and Weeds by sisabet DANY. Wow, this blew me away and actually made me cry, it's just so intense. This is Dany's story, through all of season 1. [This is Game of Thrones and Dany, so expect sexual violence, other kinds of violence, and nudity.] Smallville I Swear by dualbunny, greensilver, and sweetestdrain I think this is actually the crackiest thing I have ever seen. :D Up May I Suggest by absolutedestiny I didn't even like the movie because I found it too sad. But I'm a glutton for punishment, so of course I had to watch the vid that people keep saying made them cry. If anything, the vid is more emotional than the movie, but since it doesn't drag things out for an entire movie, I actually think it works better. It made me cry my eyes out, but it's stunningly beautiful too. Stargate (SG-1, SGA, and a bit of SGU) High Voltage by kuwdora Dense and rich look at the Ancients in Stargate. There's a lot going on here and I especially like how we see the impact of both direct contact with the ancients and the effects of all the technology they left behind for people to stumble over. Man, the Ancients were fuckers.

[x] astridv: Rec of the day: So, I watched this vid on the plane and have been itching to rec it: In Exchange for Your Tomorrows by lim (Harry Potter) Music: House of the Rising Sun by Eric Burdon. A Severus Snape character study that's compelling and visually stunning. Honestly, what struck me about this vid - among other things - was just how incredibly cool it makes the movies look.

Dixon's Girl by sabrina_il Fabulous perspective of the women in XMFC. Love the suggestion at the end. Turn It Off by livelikejack Erik teaches the kids how to repress their gay urges like a good Mormon. There are jokes about child abuse and cancer (and Mormons, obvs.), so take care. Like a Boss by forgerness :56 nearly made me fall out of my chair. The End by giandujakiss My favorite of the vids exploring Erik and Charles throughout the franchise. I love Erik's determination at 2:26, surrounded by future!Magneto's destruction. My Number by greensilver Amazing parallels with Erik/Charles, Jean/Scott, and Logan/Rogue. Just keeps breaking your heart over and over. Bonus Fassy: Blood, Tears, and Gold by kuwdora I might just rec this vid every day for the rest of my life. Bonus McAvoy: Why Are You Here by prodigi240 This song will always be bradcpu's, but I dearly love this Wanted vid.
