[x] carryingon | Festivids Recs!: E.T. - Love Will Win Pathos gets short shrift in critical circles, as though somehow our great big thumping hearts aren't something that connects us. This vid is unapologetically emotional, although no more so than the original movie, and it's an absolutely lovely distillation of the hope that runs through the film. The vid perfectly captures the sense of duality I have in watching E.T., now as a grown-up looking at a child I once identified with so strongly. I love this. The Great Mouse Detective - My Aviator The music is just perfect for the source material, and the vid is friendly, charming, and smooth. The work looks effortless, which generally means that it's anything but to make. There's no camp here, but the vid has a gentle sense of humor that celebrates the friendship at the heart of this story. How to Train Your Dragon - I'm Still Here This vid emphasizes a number of really interesting points -- the use of mist and cloud, for example -- but also restates the emotional touchstones of Hiccup's story. The footage choices are perfect, and the choice to emphasize both iconic and lesser-known moments is delightful. This is very well done indeed; it's the kind of vid that makes me cheer.

[x] silveronthetree: Festivids recs.: Festivids is always such a delightful surprise because I don't really follow vidding news. Here are some of the vids I've enjoyed so far. Waterloo (Vid. Down With Love - 2003, Waterloo by ABBA) Down with hetero-normative expectations! Adorable and charming new Barbara/Vikki narrative for the movie. Let's Go to the Mall (Clueless - 1995. Let's Go to the Mall by Robin Sparkles) Having fun is what it's all about! Awesome with a genius song choice. Lovin' You (Bringing Up Baby - 1938. Lovin' You by Dar Williams) This is delightful and the comic timing of the editing is spot on. Bloom in Adversity (Mulan. Color the Sky by Two Steps From Hell) I love the fluidity of this beautiful vid. Ain't No Other Man (Mulan. Ain't No Other Man by Christina Aguilera) Ain't no other man for Shang. This manages to capture everything I love about Mulan in one brilliant vid. Me Against the Music (Red - 2010. Me Against the Music by Britney Spears feat. Madonna) Are you ready? Fantastic team vid that I want to watch over and over. Edited to add Love Will Win (E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial - 1982. Music: Love Will Always Win by Opshop) Just know one thing. Oh my heart. This is a magical vid.

[x] theleaveswant | Day 12 Do-Over and stuff by which I mostly mean FESTIVIDS: The masterlist of this year's vids is here, and you can use the tag sidebar to navigate this and previous years. I've got lots more I want to say about this year's vids (patterns in source and song choices, recs, etc.), but for now I'm going to stick to squeeing about MY TWO GIFT VIDS! I had no idea what to expect, after my requests went up for pinch-hitters twice before deadline, but I ended up receiving two lovely shiny vids all for my very own. They are, alphabetically by source and title, Fearless (Red), a gorgeously dreamy Ivan/Victoria vid (hearts, glowing hearts forever), and New In Town (Whip It), which is just, EEEEE, ear-to-ear grins, everything I love about that wonderful film boosted by a deliciously zippy song. Basically they are both MADE OF WIN. Go, watch, and leave glowing feedback!

[x] leanwellback | everything is festivids and nothing hurts: I GOT THREE VIDS FOR festivids! THREE! AND THEY'RE ALL AWESOME! Clearly I have been a good boy this year ;D Weapon of Choice (Jumper) This is so awesome, I cannot. David getting caught up in the war with the Paladins and his relationship with Griffin and all of the fantastic special effects and badassery and Jamie Bell's hotness afa;fjas;adk! ♥! The music is great and the editing is really fast-paced and slick, just like the film and GAH, SO COOL. And then I got two Se7en vids and between both of them, they capture everything I love about this film. Archetypal Sins This one focuses on the murders (so is fairly gory as you can imagine) and how Mills and Somerset get swept up into John Doe's brutal sermon and the tragic inevitability of everything that follows. The music choice is wonderful for getting the mood of the film across; it's so bleak but beautiful. Just *HANDS* Gorgeous. Like a Man Possessed This focuses more on Mills and Somerset (especially Mills) as people and god, it's just so beautifully heartbreaking. Not as gory as the first one, but there's still unpleasant stuff in here. Without spoiling if you haven't seen the film, it builds wonderfully to the climax. The editing and the use of motion is fantastic as is the song choice. Again, bleak and tragically beautiful.

[x] dementedsiren | Fanvid Rec: Ain't No Other Man (Mulan) Festvid: Ain't No Other Man a Mulan vid for some_stars. This vid, people. This vid. It's a brilliant choice of song with some great editing but, mainly, it's just plain fun. I've watched it three times and I've grinned like a loon the whole time.

[x] littleheaven | I haz Festivids!: OMG you guys, I was such a lucky girl this year! My festividders did a GREAT job. Firstly, I got a  kick-ass Stargate (the movie) vid, which is like a huge, intense, wonderful movie trailer. How hard must it have been to vid to an instrumental? The pacing and musicality is incredible and the end is just basically one big goosebump-fest.  Secondly, someone made me a treat! *\O/* It's the Quantum Leap vid of my HEART and I have all these FEELINGS about it that I can't adequately express because all I can do is flail and cry in equal amounts. It's achingly beautiful and wonderfully edited. Go sniffle over Sam's epic journey

[x] jackiekjono | Festivids - Middleman vid: So here is the vid that was made for me me and just for me!!!! And it has with vampires and puppets and Puppet Vampires!!! I love the song and clearly have to find more stuff by this band. I love the story. And the end credits kill me! I love the jump cuts and the smoking bat and Lacy/MM!

[x] aworldinside | Vids make me want to rewatch everything.: To Make You Feel My Love (Sportsnight: ensemble) I wasn't sure about this when I read what the song was (not too big on country songs tbh and a song I dislike can take me right out of a vid) but OMG this was amazing. It doesn't focus on just one relationship but it touches a little on so many little moments of love in the show's run. Just, amazing. It made me want to re-watch episodes and Daaaan. <3 I uh may have watched this a few times and plan to watch it a few times more before I close the tab. Running Up That Hill (Spooks: Tom, Danny, Zoe) I loved this show in S1-3 (after that I sort of stopped following it so closely) and it's where I developed my still standing crush on Matthew MacFadyen and this vid does such a great job of capturing Tom, Danny and Zoe's pain and what they went through. All the feelings. Oh, Tom. I might need to rewatch. Great song choice too. What a Man (Pride and Prejudice 1995: Elizabeth/Darcy) Yes someone did vid Pride and Prejudice to the Salt 'n' Pepa song. Yes, it's awesome. Doomsday (Independence Day: gen) Awesome editing and look to this. I almost want to see this ridiculous movie again now, if only for the nostalgia value. A Little Less Conversation (Yes Minister: gen) Yes (Prime) Minister vid! Emphasises the facial expressions of Jim, Bernard and Sir Humprhrey and it's so well done. Sir Humphrey is awesome. <3

[x] genusshrike | Festivids!: I was so excited about Festivids this morning that I totally woke up at five for go-live. It was pretty awesome. Some lovely person made me a Casanova vid! With all the dancing in it! And the sex. Here it is: Casanova: Harem in Tuscony. So much fun ♥
tags: festivids jan2012

[x] absolutedestiny | Festivids!: Festivids is upon us and it's filled with awesome! I received two great vids - a totally tripped out and stunning Jigoku vid and a totally charming, sweet and fun Venture Bros vid. Woohoo! Big long recs list will have to come later but first up is an awesome Festivids vid you've not seen yet. You must correct that immediately.

[x] serrico | All some children do is work: --Children's Work. Life vid. About Dani and Charlie and Dani-and-Charlie, built around the conceit that, in that they have both been screwed over by the same conspiracy, they are siblings. (Only it's much more complicated than that.) This is the Life vid I've been waiting to see for YEARS. I've watched it about ten times now, and I just keep finding chilling new excellence. --Hot In Herre. Cabaret vid. You think you know what this is based solely on song and source, don't you? You're wrong. --Extreme Ways. Dead Like Me vid. As another commenter noted, Festivids has a tradition of providing at least one DLM vid that provokes an automatic, Oh, Mason, response. This year, this is that vid. To the nth degree. --Sexy Back. Die Hard vid. Perhaps the most extremely, sublimely ridiculous action-movie vid EVER. If you need an emotional palate cleanser after those first three vids, this is the one to watch. --Outside the Box and Papa's Got a Brand New Bag. Maru the Cat vids. Yes. ...yes. (Together, they will provide you with a painstakingly complete and achingly nuanced portrait of the vast emotional landscape contained within Maru the Cat. You may well weep to behold it.) --Blow. Revenge vid. In which Emily Thorne makes high society go boom. That is just a sampling of the vids I enjoyed; there are so many more worth watching. After you've seen these ones, poke around a bit and try some others.

[x] laceblade | Festivids Recs: Just Dance, Utena the Musical set to Lady Gaga's Just Dance. (Utena the Musical is one of the most obscure sources ever, so if you're into it, check the main post for two other vids set to it. Of course, my rec is for the most heinous of the three.) Express Yourself, Newsies set to Madonna's Express Yourself. Bloom in Adversity, a really beautiful Mulan vid. Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, the song by James Brown, set to Maru the cat videos. Outside the Box, Maru/boxes, set to U2's I still haven't found what I'm looking for Hero by Imogen Heap, set to Kamikaze Girls I Feel It All by Feist, set to Mad Men. The vid focuses on the character of Peggy. I like the song choice, too. It's deceptively up-beat for the lyrics, which I think captures the tone of Mad Men pretty well. Sophia's Song - character study of Sophia from Last Exile, set to Poe's Wild.

[x] merrily | Sunday Links & Recs: Return of the Prodigal Post: Festivids is up! And I haven't had time to do more than make a very quick cursory pass, but how could I resist a mashup of Maru clips set to U2? Outside of the Box by anon

[x] lacerta: Things that make a post: My morning was made indefinitely better by not just one, but two vids of Maru the cat. TWO. MARU VIDS. MY JOY CANNOT BE CONTAINED. (My own two cats must never know.) And there was much more rejoicing because: Thelma & Louise set to Dolly Parton, The Fifth Element set to Tori Amos, speaking of fire red hair: Lola rennt ♥, two vids of The Wire, one about Bubbles, one about Omar, and in case the two The Wire vids made you as sad as me, here's Carlton dancing to Prince. :D

[x] fizzyblogic | festivids recs, day two: Making the Fellowship, Lord of the Rings DVD extras, ensemble. This vid takes you through location scouting and concept art, prop-making and storyboarding, costumes and prosthetics, sets and actors and green-screen, to post-production and the finished film. Epic in scope, perfectly showing the enormous amount of work that went into these films. RIIIIINGS ♥ FILM-MAKING ♥ Friendship and Courage and Whatever, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, ensemble. SO BADASS HOLY CRAP JUST WATCH IT. SO. FRICKING. BADASS. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full of Promise, Stand By Me, ensemble. So gorgeous and so moving. Jailbreak, Star Wars, ensemble. SHENANIGANS :D Everything Comes and Goes, Tangled, Rapunzel(/Flynn). So lovely. Contracts, Wanted, Fox & Wesley. Fantastic. Passionate Kisses, While You Were Sleeping, Lucy(/Jack). Such a lovely Lucy vid, awww. Firework, Whip It, Bliss. Gah, this is gorgeous, a brilliant Bliss vid. New In Town, Whip It, Bliss. A great look at her relationships with people and roller derby.

[x] rthstewart | Birds, cats, and self referential characters: Also, festivids has gone live and omg what a delightful time suck, including an awesome video of Maru the cat (yes, Maru has his own fandom now).  Though if the octopus that stole the camera can have his own Yuletide fic, why not, right?
tags: festivids jan2012

[x] semielliptical | Maru, vids, and family fannishness: I have found time for about a half-dozen viewings of these fabulous vids about Maru the cat. They're rather different but both make me SO HAPPY! Papa's Got a Brand New Bag Music: Papa's Got A Brand New Bag (Pt 1) by James Brown Excellent and hilarious timing. Outside the Box, Maru/boxes Music: I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by U2 Maru is adorable even when he's demonstrating his inner angst. They're part of festivids, an annual small fandom vidding exchange. One of the many things I like about it is watching some of the vids with mr. semi. His approach to vid watching is different than mine; he'll give up on a vid very quickly if it's not working for him, which is certainly more efficient in terms of time spent. There are still quite a few vids I want to watch that I haven't gotten to yet, but here are a few of my other favorites so far: Hot in Herre Fandom: Cabaret - 1974 Music: Hot in Herre by Nelly Top rec from mr. semi so far. I really want to watch this a few more times, it uses the source so well and fits a compelling narrative into just a few minutes. The Undeserving Rich Fandom: Jeeves & Wooster Music: With a little bit of luck by Stanley Holloway This song from My Fair Lady is unexpected but an apt choice for Jeeves and Wooster, and the vid does a great job featuring the series' physical comedy. What a Man Fandom: Pride and Prejudice - 1995 Music: Whatta Man by Salt 'n' Pepa featuring En Vogue Short vid with the a clear focus: Mr. Darcy is hot! Express Yourself Fandom: Newsies Music: Express Yourself by Madonna This vid tells a cute story, and cuts the choreography from Newsies to make it look better than it is, and makes it work perfectly with Madonna. Side note on Newsies: Until about a year ago I was vaguely aware that the movie Newsies existed, but I had no idea that it was a musical, or that it starred a young Christian Bale, or that his performance included one of the most awkward solo dance numbers ever. I was educated by another Newsies vid - Club Can't Handle Me by Viorica8957 (which if I recall correctly had been taken down from YouTube, but it's up at the moment) - take a look at this vid if you want to get an idea of just how awkward Christian Bale's solo is.

[x] talitha78 | My Festivids Recs: First of all, I think we can safely say that this year's Festivids belongs to Maru the Cat. There are two vids dedicated to him, both excellent. Outside the Box: Epic and hilarious--a serious treatment of Maru's quest for the perfect box. Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag: Perfect song choice and sharp editing. Cabaret Hot in Herre: Refreshingly unexpected song choice that works extremely well. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Baby I’m a Star: Fun vid that showcases the dance stylings of Carlton. Independence Day Doomsday: All kinds of shit explodes on the beat. This is my kind of vid. Ladyhawke Bells, Books and Candles: Excellent song choice and gorgeous editing. Legend Light and Dark: Great song choice and beautiful editing. LXD - The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers Extraordinary: Amazeballs dance editing. This source looks like tons of fun. Mulan Bloom in Adversity: Great Mulan character study with lovely editing. Parks and Recreation Fly: Another vid that made me cry (besides my AWESOME GIFTVID ). This is an absolutely lovely and moving portrait of Leslie Knope. Go Places: Fantastic Leslie/Ann femslash vid. I'm just gonna quote the comment I left the vidder: Awwwwww. I love this SO MUCH. It's so sweet, and kinda wistful at the same time. And the editing! Ahhhh, so good. The tumble at 1:45 was PURE MAGIC. Quantum Leap Coming Home: Damn, this is a great vid. Again, I'm just gonna copy and paste my comment: Oh, wow. This is fantastic. Beautiful, beautiful use of a wonderful song, and absolutely everything I loved about the show, all right here. It truly doesn't get better than this. *standing ovation* Red Me Against the Music: Inspired song choice and razor-sharp cutting combine for super fun times. Rocky series I Can't Hold Back: LOLOLOL. Where to start with this one? First of all, song choice. Journey!! And then the opening dialogue clip--Apollo doesn't need that type of man (Rocky!!!) in his life. Then the beach running and the slow-mo hugging!!!! HAHAHA. Oh, so much cheesy, slashy goodness here. Go check it out! The Scarlet Pimpernel - 1982 Da' Scarlet Dipernel: Genius song choice and clever editing! I LOLed. Star Wars (1977-1983 original trilogy) Jailbreak: Really smart, sharp editing here. Stick It Ballroom Blitz: This is such a fun vid--great use of color and movement. Tiger and Bunny Free for All: Superb action editing here.

[x] leanwellback | all festivids, all the time: Long Night's Journey Into Day (28 Days Later) This is so good. Very atmospheric, it really builds the threat of the infected throughout to the climax. Excellent song choice and very effective editing and clip choices. I especially like the lyric matching in the last verse; associating the soldiers and the refuge with God, it makes those clips all the more powerful. Hot In Herre (Cabaret) The musicality of this vid is just fantastic. Brilliant editing, wonderfully sensual and so riveting. The progression from sexy funtime cabaret to the general climate in 30s Berlin is so well done. The pacing is marvellous, and even though I haven't seen the film all the way through, the narrative is clear and compelling and I love it. so bohemian like you (Clueless) This vid put the biggest smile on my face! I felt like a teenager again watching this, in the best possible way. It's so cute! I can't believe I never thought of this song with this film, but it works brilliantly and Cher and Josh omg I love themmmm *____* Take It Off (D.E.B.S) The D.E.B.S girls kicking ass and taking names, with a healthy dollop of Amy/Lucy goodness. It's fun and cheeky and not too serious, just what a D.E.B.S vid should be :D Sexy Back (Die Hard series) DUDE. This vid kicks so much ass, I cannot even. John McClane being a sexy badass fighting sexy villains sexily to a Poison cover of Sexyback? WHAT EVEN IS THIS GLORIOUSNESS? Make a vid to a punchy rock song with perfectly timed gunfire, punches and explosions and I am YOURS. Awake My Soul (Doctor Who 1963-1989) As soon as I saw that this was a Sarah Jane vid to a Mumford & Sons song I said to myself, oh god, this is going to make me cry, isn't it? And I was right. And absolutely beautiful tribute to Lis Sladen and Sarah Jane Smith. Let It Go (Doctor Who - 1996) Don't let the fact that this is to a Busted song put you off! It's mostly instrumental and not at all what you might expect. But anyway, yes! This is a lovely vid focusing on Grace and Chang and how they're affected by the Doctor and the Master coming into their lives. Great musicality and punctuation. Collision Course (Donnie Darko) One of my requested fandoms was Donnie Darko and if this has been made for me, I'd be ecstatic. It's really atmospheric and eerie, with this dreamlike feel to everything. The song choice is a large part of that, but the editing just builds on it and lyrically it's so perfect for Donnie and his journey in the film. I'm Not Done (Donnie Darko) Another brilliantly atmospheric vid. Both of these vids use songs with unusual vocals that give this disjointed feel that reflects Donnie so well. The repeated images in this really help it build and the constant, steady beat behind the vocals combined with the editing gives it pace and suspense. Baby, I'm A Star (Fresh Prince of Bel Air) Carlton desperately trying to show Will that he's a star :D This is just as joyous and happy-making as you would expect a Carlton dancing vid to be! Glorious! The Devil takes care of his own (From Dusk Till Dawn) Ohhh, this is so much fun. A gory, kickass romp with bonus Salma Hayek doing erotic dancing and Juliette Lewis being a badass and killing vampires messily :D Just what you'd expect from a vid of this film, really! Ballroom Blitz (Ghostbusters) YES. AWESOMENESS. As soon as this started I knew I was going to love it, and then that Let's Gooooo! happens and I need a download of this so I can keep it and watch it forever omg. Just, gah, SO MUCH FUN and so skilfully done. LOVE. Retropactum (The Goonies) Oh, how I love this vid. The Goonies is one of those films that will always be watched in my house when it's on TV. My mum loves it, and I'm tempted to send her a link to this vid because it's just so wonderful and captures the heart of the story and feels like the biggest hug ♥! I'm Still Here (How to Train Your Dragon) God, this is wonderful. Perfect song for Hiccup, brilliant editing and the musicality is mesmerising. The way the vidder matches the clips of Toothless flying to the music is just... gah, it makes my heart soar. Beautiful. Doomsday (Independence Day) SHIT BLOWS UP GOOOOOOOOD. But more importantly shit blows up with impeccable timing! The way the music builds up in each half is awesome. That second when the countdown ends on Doomsday and then BOOM the music kicks back in and the aliens attack, UNF. And then the quiet of the aftermath as it builds up again to the counter-attack, just. AMAZING. The Undeserving Rich (Jeeves and Wooster) Could there be a more fitting song for Bertie Wooster and his peers? Wonderful lyric matches, great editing, great movement and use of physicality. So much fun, just like the source! Papa's Got a Brand New Bag (Maru the Cat) I just... such_heights, you are a genius for nominating this fandom. DELIGHTFUL KITTY SHENANIGANS! Fantastic movement and matching of pounces and paw swipes to the music! Outside the Box (Maru the Cat) Maru and his epic quest to find the perfect box *____* This is so hilarious and so epic, I am unable to even. The lyric matches are genius and omg his little faaace. ADORABLE. Do It Like A Dude (The Middleman) I watched this because I like the song and I thought why not? I've never seen the show, and after watching this it became clear what an oversight that is. on my part! Natalie Morales, come be a sexy badass over here kthnx *paws at* Excellent vid, with some great girlslash moments :D Ultimate Showdown Of Ultimate Destiny (The Middleman) So I was already sold on this show from that last vid, but oh my god. Any show that you can vid to this song and vid it well is clearly a show I needed in my face four years ago. SO EPIC. Ooh La La! (Moulin Rouge!) This song works perfectly with the grungy, anachronistic sensuality of the film and is so great for Christian and Satine. Wonderful editing and pacing, it flows really well. Love it! Ain't No Other Man (Mulan) HEE! Mulan is the only man for Shang :D The use of their hilarious facial expressions as punctuation is just awesome and every clip on the you're badass line in the chorus made me go fuck yeah. Great reminder of why Mulan is one of my favourite Disney heroines. Me Against the Music (Red) Any vid that pits Karl Urban!Britney against Bruce Willis!Madonna would be one I had a fond for, but this is so awesome I can't wait to download a copy. Fantastic ensemble piece, great editing and so much badassery. LOVE. Better Smeg Than Dead (Red Dwarf) This is just so much fun and so silly, but so sincere! It's a great friendship vid and very true to the daftness and hilarity of Red Dwarf :D Livin' On A Prayer (Rocky series) Man, I haven't even seen Rocky (I know, shush) and this is so fucking inspirational, it makes me want to have a goddamn montage. I loved the choice to focus on Rocky's family and home life rather than the boxing. It makes the boxing clips so much more meaningful, because you get what he's fighting for and just... any vid that can live up to that key change, well. Magnificent. Tom Cruise Crazy (Singin' In the Rain) Not a fan of this song, but what the vidder does with it is wonderful; the lyric matches and the editing are great and I can't not rec a vid that has Don/Cosmo and Don/Kathy/Cosmo undertones to it, come on! Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full of Promise (Stand By Me) I was determined not to cry at this one, and I managed to hold it together for most of it, but the ending got me. Just a gorgeous look at these four boys, especially Gordie and Chris, and their friendship and journey into adolescence. So well made and so moving. Jailbreak (Star Wars original trilogy) REBEL ALLIANCE SHENANIGANS! This one had me at that perfect matching of the music with Luke drawing the lightsaber for the first time. The Han/Leia bits made me ridiculously gleeful and the whole thing is such a blast to watch! If You See Kate (Sugar Rush) Tiny lesbian antics! I have only got round to watching Sugar Rush earlier this month, and this vid pretty much captures everything I liked about it! Great song choice (McFly, YAY!) I love that Kate is more than just Sugar, and the bits with Kim and Saint are so adorable and happy-making! Clever lyric matching, great motion and just lovely ♥ The Cave (Toy Story) Toys and Marcus Mumford's voice and I'll be over here clutching my chest. Oh, just, oh. I love how much Woody is at the heart of this, despite it being an ensemble (and to my shippy heart, OT3) vid, because he really is the heart of that toy family. Gorgeous editing! And yes, that was the cut down version!
