Title: Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (1/1)
Author: Leigh, aka leigh_adams
Characters: Ernie Macmillan/Lisa Turpin, Holly Macmillan
Rating: G
Word Count: 719
Summary: Real love isn't a big thing. It's a thousand little things.
Author’s Notes: So, it's been a while since I wrote something fluffy -- let's change that, shall we? This was written as a little gift for baby_k21, who writes Ernie Macmillan at pinksheep_wench (where I write Lisa Turpin). Holly is their daughter, who I play at the next-gen RPG pink_lambs. Keeks, I hope you like this!

Holly’s never had a shortage of love in her life. The Macmillan siblings, even when they wanted to beat each other silly, were tight-knit and loved each other fiercely. She loved her best friend, Annaleigh, and she knew that love was reciprocated. And of course, her parents and grandparents loved her and her siblings more than she could say.

She wouldn’t say that she’s an expert on love, though. At least, not romantic love. Sure, she’s dated several guys -- when puberty hits early, you start getting a lot of attention before you’re really ready for it -- and she had even fancied herself in love with one or two of them. But it wasn’t real love. She knows that now.

She might not be an expert, but she knows real love when she sees it.

How?

She’s seen it in action nearly every single day of her life. Some men try to downplay their feelings, as if it isn’t proper to let others see how mad he is about his woman. Not Ernie Macmillan -- not Holly’s Da. She’s never seen another man so unabashedly in love with his wife, so unashamed to show that love.

Real love doesn’t mean Shakespearean soliloquies. It doesn’t mean flowers and chocolates and hearts every day -- though they have their place on occasion. Real love is a thousand little things; ordinary, unassuming things. A kiss whenever he came home from work -- no matter what. Holding hands when they walked down the street.

The first few years of her life, Holly spent on tour with her mum and siblings. It wasn’t an ideal scenario, but mum was a performer -- that was what she did. Noah and Holly -- and eventually Pip and Rachael -- spent a lot of time with Grandmum Rachel in hotel rooms and backstage at performance venues while their mum sang to her fans.

Looking back, she knew it had to have been hard on her parents to be separated so much. Da couldn’t take three months off work every year, so he stayed at home. The times he surprised them all by coming to a show, a young Holly had been thrilled to see her Da.

It wasn’t until she was much older did she realize that he came because he missed them so much.

When Holly was twelve, her mum’s cat died. Ella had been a part of their family her entire life -- her mum had picked her out as a kitten. Lisa Macmillan was heartbroken. Ella had been like her sixth child, part of her life for nearly twenty years.

And three months later, after the initial grief had passed, Holly vividly remembered her Da coming home with a little ball of orange fur. Despite the fact that he hated cats, and had always complained about Ella pouncing on his toes, Ernie didn’t want his wife to be sad. A new kitten was a small price to pay to see the smile on Lisa’s face.

Little things. Making sure the music room was built just to her specifications. Playing the ‘bad Auror’ when Lisa couldn’t bear to shout at her children. Carrying her up the stairs when she fell asleep on the sofa -- and when he could have used magic to float her to the bedroom.

Real love is something Holly’s always wanted, and it’s something she has yet to find. Rachael, her little sister, has found it; blind goat herders in Mongolia could see how head over arse Tag Wood is for her sister. She has a sneaking suspicion Noah’s found it, too -- but knowing Noah, it might be another five years before he realizes it.

Holly wants it. She wants to be someone’s world, to see their face light up when they see her (and not just because she’s naked).

But good things are worth the wait, and unlike her younger siblings, she’s patient. She knows that there’s someone out there for her -- someone who’s possibly lost and refuses to ask directions. She’s heard the story of how her parents met; a completely unassuming run-in at The Three Broomsticks.

Real love happens when you least expect it. But thanks to her parents, she knows what to look for.
