Cher Rabbit,
Thank you very much for the letter. I am doing just fine. I’m glad to hear that you are doing well, too. Spring is wonderful. Winter up here can get very cold, and it can be miserable. Now things are growing again and, best of all, it’s much better for flying. I’ve been practising some Quidditch techniques, really whenever I’m able. Lucius has been helping out-he’s a good sport for being target practice for Bludgers! One of the Beaters on the Slytherin side is a seventh-year, and if I’m good enough (which I mean to be) I could be playing next year.
Aside from my own flying, May means that we have two Quidditch matches coming up here at Hogwarts, the last two of the season. Slytherin’s playing Hufflepuff on Saturday, and if we can beat them by at least 40 points we could win, depending on stupid Gryffindor.
Your penmanship is looking better than last time you wrote. Keep working hard, and be good.
Ton frère,
Rodolphus

Dear Dolphin,
How are you? I am fine. Today is the Quidditch mach you talked about! I know Slytherin will win because it’s the best. Mr. Greengrass says it’s bad to decide what I think is best before I’m even at school becaus I might end up in Hufflepuff and then I’d be sad if they lost today but I think he’s just trying to be nice because he feels bad for them. I don’t feel bad I think they are just not going to win but I know that next year when you are on the team no one will ever beet Slytherin.
GO RODOLPHUS!
That is like the flag I will make when you are playing and we goe and see you play. It will be green and I will wave it. We will hav fun!
Love,
Rabbit

Dear Rabbit,
Thank you so much for the letter. I am doing very well, thank you. How are you? You should tell me more about home next time.
Sadly, we didn’t get the points we needed. We didn’t even win. We’re all fairly shocked that Hufflepuff beat us. Pounded us, really. They aren’t anything stunning but they have a smashing good Seeker, and their Keeper isn’t half bad either, so they kept out most of our best shots. Plus, we had some horrid weather, and that ended up helping them, due to the direction of the wind and rain and all that. They even have a chance at the Cup-imagine that! I’d say they cheated but that’s against their entire way. Mr. Greengrass is probably right, that you should keep your mind open. When you come here you could be in Hufflepuff yourself. It would be all right, though. We’d all still love you as long as you aren’t in Gryffindor. I think we even had a great-aunt or something like that in Hufflepuff once. But you have a long time before that!
I’m sending a letter for Father and Maman along with yours. Be SURE that they get it! All right, little Rabbit? If I get a Howler about how I haven’t written them I’ll know just who to blame.
Stay out of trouble!
Ton frère,
Rodolphus

Dear Rodolphus,
How are you? I am fine. I’m very sorry about the match. I won’t be in Hufflepuff, I promise. It wasn’t a great aunt it was our 7 th cousin, 2 ce removed, and I dont want to be anything like her.
Home is fun. After lessons Uncle Liam came over today and so Darren came over too. We played exploring and found awhole new world of wizards and kreachers and ghosts!! But not normal ones. The people there were all MAD!!!! They were short and they all had blue hair and they wore really boring dark clothes. Even the witches. And they all talked to the beasts like they were friends and Darren and I had to teach them how to be proper wizards. After that we had tea. Maman is getting ready for another party. There are always parties, but its all right because I get to see Sirius and Darren and Evan even if we are all dressed up and kept inside, and this time we get to have a sleepover. Father is fine too. He is rather busy too.
We all miss you lots! Are there any more Quidditch matches?
Love,
Rabastan Algernon Lestrange

Dear Rabbit,
It does sound like you are having a lot of fun! Far more than we are here, I’m sure. Exams are starting to approach. It’s not so bad for us second-years but the common room has become far less pleasant. The fifth-years are pulling their hair out over OWL preparation, and all the seventh-year NEWT students are busy revising. I sure am glad not to be sitting for those kinds of examinations this spring! We just have regular ones, which aren’t fun, but they aren’t too bad either.
There’s only one more Quidditch match at Hogwarts-- between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. It should be entertaining enough, and hopefully the weather will be a bit better. I’m hoping Ravenclaw pulls through, myself.
Don’t let Darren Avery get you stuck in trouble, and be good to Maman and Father.
Yours,
Rodolphus

Dear Rodolphus,
How are you? I am fine. I wish you had been here last week! Maman planted all kinds of flowers and last week they all bloomed all at once. She had a party outside and I watched from upstairs. When everyone was there all at once the flowers bloomed! They were purple and blue and pink and yellow and white. Darren and I haven’t got in trouble at all. I only got in a little bit of trouble with Sirius.
The exams sound rather scary! You are very lucky not to be one of the children with N.E.W.T.S or O.W.L.S. How is Lucius? How is Bellatrix Miss Black?
Good luck! Write back soon.
Love,
Rabastan
P. S. Isn’t this letter a lot better? Mr. Greengrass made us fix it for you.

Dear Rabbit,
Your last letter did look much better! You’re clearly improving.
The final Quidditch match just ended. Thankfully, Ravenclaw pulled ahead with a strong offense and a number of clever moves on the part of the Seeker. They put themselves solidly ahead of Hufflepuff and Gryffindor, though that means they’re also solidly ahead of us. There’s always next year, of course-and hopefully next year I’ll be much more a part of it. I’m still practising a lot on my technique. I do have to bulk up a bit more if I’m going to be placed as a Beater. If that doesn’t happen, I could be a starting Chaser, but I think my skill will outweigh my size.
You’re right! I am lucky to not be one of them. Still, they know how to make life miserable for everyone. It’s getting worse, too. The older students like to send us on tasks and it gets difficult to get all of one’s work done if one is running here and there fetching books from the Library or quills or notes from dormitories! I don’t think they sleep but I do a good job of keeping away from the common room before I get roped into being a study aide for an all-night session. Soon I’ll have to start studying myself, though. I probably won’t have as much time to write. This is all why this letter came a little later, too. Sorry, Rabbit.
Be good. Soon, I’ll be home!
Until then,
Rodolphus
P.S. Hello Rabbit! Dolph’s not joking about making me help him train - it’s Quidditch and exercises almost every day. Hogwarts is great, but summer’s even better. I’m sure I’ll see you then! -- L.A.M.
P.P.S. Rabbit, this is Bellatrix. I’m counting on you to keep my sister and cousins in line while I’m gone. Cissy doesn’t need everything she wants and Sirius could always use an extra knock on the end. I hope I can trust you in my place. -Bellatrix Black
