Avatar JESUS CHRIST!

Well, just got back from seeing Avatar in IMAX 3D. I was dubious if it would live up to the hype but am happy to say that Cameron hit it out of the park, this movie is the ultimate fantasy.

And it truly is a cinematic game changer. It's very clear now that *ANYTHING* can be put on film in a believable way. Anything.

You can do anything as long as you have $300,000,000 to spend on making the movie. I'm pretty sure for $300 million I could put a man on the moon :P

Well the real achievement as far as I'm concerned is the advancement in the state of the art that James Cameron brought about.

The thing about Avatar was that it wasn't just animated on a 2D pane like a regular CG movie. In Avatar the 3D sets were built and the motion capture data was piped in and mapped to the character and the action was all animated before 'filming' ever started.

When they started 'filming' in that 3D space, Cameron used a virtual camera to move and swoop around in that space to get the angles that he wanted just as if he were using real live actors on a real set.

That is the real marvel of this film, it opens the doors for others to use this same technology.

I'm definitely going to see it again, probably on IMAX next time, though I think I'll wait a few weeks for the crowd to die down a bit.

That really is the breathtaking part of this film. Some of the landscapes were so beautiful that it made me tear up. It was like seeing the grand canyon for the first time, or something.

Hahaha, not much!

We'll see what he has to say then.

How did you manage that? I thought they were sold out for the next week.

They are sold-out online for a week but we drove to the box office anyway just to see if maybe they were holding tickets for box office sale only.

They had exactly 3 seats that "just opened up" for a showing tonight. I guess someone called and cancelled their tickets.

Avatar was most definitely on the good side. I was pleasantly surprised by how much it exceeded my expectations.
