I've been sceptical about Wide Sargasso Sea because, while I love meta-fiction, I kind of loathe "the untold story" actually being told. But others have recommended it, so I guess I'll just have to pick it up one day.

Well, it by no means blows Jane Eyre out of the water. And as I said, no one is ever even mentioned by name except for Bertha Mason. So, in reality, she crafted a little book that could really fit into any storyline of the time or stand alone.

Its mentioned in many feminist writing circles along with Woolf, and works such as "The Awakening," and "The Yellow Wallpaper." If you're studying literature and you get into criticism, and more specifically feminist criticism, one of the first phrases you will hear mentioned, every time, is "The Madwoman in the Attic," as a dominant theme in writings that call upon feminist readings.

a good book on feminist criticism is one actually called "The Madwoman in the Attic," as well as "Sister's Choice," and really most criticism by Elaine Showalter.

...ah, I love having a degree in english...especially when i can remember this stuff...lol
