Gross, but a fact of cat life. They lick their fur and such, and it has to go somewhere. When enough of it built up, they just kinda.... hack it all back out.
Usually on the couch, or someone's shoes.
Think of it as a momentous occasion - baby's first hairball!
Certain foods can turn a cat's stomach - if they're too rich, or if it's wet food that's been sitting out too long. And 'too long' varies according to weather. If it's hot and humid, 4 hours is long enough for the food to go rancid. Some cats that grew up stressed will also gorge themselves on their food, until they eat so much they've got to throw up. It's just awesome, let me tell you.
Also, cats will deliberately eat grass to make themselves sick. Joy.
They'll also throw up if there's a big clump of indigestible stuff in their stomach. Hair is the most common because cats are covered in hair, but they'll also throw up, oh....feathers. Ours throw up lots of feathers because they're fiendishly good at finding them. Or if they nibble on their people, they'll throw up clumps of human hair, which is just - oh, it's a delight. Or carpet fluff, or dust, or even fabric and fake fur.
