You’ve gotten used to being on the sidelines - looking from the outside, wishing you were in. You feel like you’ve memorized the back of Jonghyun’s head - how the tiny hairs there make pretty patterns on the nape of his neck; how someone else’s fingers play with them, twirl them, messing them up and you see how Jonghyun doesn’t care.

He never sees it when your lips curve into a smile every time he pulls another one of his lame jokes. Even when you give your biggest laugh, someone else’s laugh resounds in his ears. You reach out to slap him mid-giggle, but he moves to cling to someone else’s arms. (He always does. And someone else is always someone who isn’t you.)

You're already on the verge of tears the day he notices your smiles don’t quite reach your eyes. He asks you about it, laying a caring hand on your shoulder as he does. You will yourself to pull away (you have to), tell him it’s nothing for him to worry about, and flash him a tired smile.

You take a few steps - last as long, too, before Onyoo is in front of you and you break into tears.

You hold on to him. And he holds you back just as tightly.

This time, you’re the one who doesn’t see Jonghyun turn away. You don’t hear his heart trying to beat as it breaks. You don’t see him run and curl into someone else’s arms, crying for you, like he always does.

One of you realizes that not all things are better left unsaid.

The other believes he has said enough. Just that, no one ever used to listen.
