why you should cover your tracks if you steal things

Aug 15, 2012 21:08

Last year, I wrote a story called Love Lockdown for my best friend jedusaur's birthday. It was Ellen Page/Ryan Ross and basically the most honest thing I wrote about what it's like when your male best friend is so rooted in your life that you don't know how to be mad at him. So: birthday fic for my best friend with a lot of really personal stuff in it. ( Read more... )

Hey, mod from one_d_fanwork here.

The fic has been removed and the user has been banned. Sorry if it took a long time to get sorted

Thank you! I'll update the entry and let lifeasacloud know that it's sorted on the comm side.

No problem! I'm active in One Direction fandom, bandom and Avengers. You could say I'm pretty invested in seeing this situation resolved as quickly and painlessly as possible.

I'm sorry this happened to you. All your writing has always felt very personal and raw to me - I have always admired that so much - and it is really awful and beyond hurtful that someone stole something that was yours and J's and then, to add insult to injury, 'changed' it.

Ugh, you were there when I accepted the prompt, you know what this fic meant to us. /o\ And I keep wondering if my blanket permission isn't enough - people can do literally anything they want with my fic behind the fourth wall as long as they mention that I'm the source. I happily give all this stuff away to fandom, I write things so honest that I wouldn't want my RL friends to guess at it, I have nothing more to give. So I'm just looking at this person like, did you see something you wanted that I wouldn't have given? A beta, concrit, coaching, anything at all? Because somewhere along the line, this person decided that the best course of action was to copy something, and no one was there to change their mind. Maybe I could've.

To be honest, I'm not sure if anything or anyone could have stopped her/him.There is a huge difference between being inspired by someone's work and plagiarism. They could have just posted a comment saying how much they responded to your work or asked to do a remix. But they didn't. It was a conscious choice.

You are one of the kindest, most generous peoples I know and I hate that someone did this to you.

It's always such a pisser to see someone doing this. I'm sorry.

Also, you might consider reporting this to stop_plagiarism because they do keep a current list of known plagiarists.

That's a great point - I submitted a report with the screenshots/text files I'd saved and the relevant links.

I just want this resolved as quickly and neatly as possible, since the worst's already happened. (Unless she insists my fic was posted to her ~tumblr first, like she said about the Thor/Loki one, despite all evidence to the contrary. If that's the case, I will stop being polite. To say I'm IRL chewing my mouth guard in anticipation is a gross understatement at this point.)

We've never talked before but I'm so sorry this happened to you!

And I can't believe she has the gall to leave the fic up after she's been found out. It's disgusting. I hope the whole fandom gets wind of this because that is just not okay.

She deleted her journal now, but since she switched from tumblr to lj and reposted before, it doesn't look like this is over. :/

(Our icons are... strangely coordinated. Twiggy and Z Berg, man, you just can't go wrong. Also, hi!)

Yeah, just saw that! It's good that she's running though.

Hopefully enough people know about it to the point where she won't get away with it on tumblr either?

Oh, and with her deleting- I pulled up "turning all those good hearts away" on one of my tabs before she deleted and I still have it up- I could screenshot the whole fic, if you don't already have a copy of it. Just for posterity/proof and all that.

And yes, matching icons are the best! And both of ours have the cigarette/water glass motif in common! and hello! :)

Hey babe! I guess it depends on us how many people find out about her? I seriously wished she'd delete her fics, stay on LJ and actually talk to me (I don't bite unless people consent to it), but we'll have to keep an eye out on Tumblr instead. And maybe new users on the 1D comms on lj. If your copy is different from this: https://www.box.com/files#/files/0/f/0/1/f_2864542323, please send me the link, yeah?

Feel free to reply anywhere in my journal, I'm actually pretty friendly. :D

omg, bb, I'm so sorry this had to happen to you! Plagerizism is awful, and it must hurt so bad to see someone else getting credit for your own writings.

Also, I know Renee (ruinswood) IRL (she's my best friend's best friend) and I never really meet her since we live in different countries, but we do talk, and she even beta'ed my fic, and I never thought that she would do something like this. Just wanted to say that I'm so incredibly sorry that this happened, and I'll try to ask her about it later. Maybe try to convince her to apolagize.

Sounds like a weird position for you to be in, sorry about that! :( If you talk to her about it, you can tell her that I genuinely won't bite if she decides to apologise.

Thanks for the comment, bb!

It is a bit of a weird position for me- I just spent my entire day going, "I can't believe she'll do this," it's just so shocking. I hear about plagerizers all the time but I never thought it would actually be someone I know.

We all have done terrible stuff before, but what she did was pretty awful and you deserve a apology. I'll email her about it. (Or, at least mention it to my best friend- she's part of the fandom but not part of fanfiction area, and she should probably know- she's an aspiring YA writer, and I know that she considers Renee one of her best friends, so she most likely showed her her own writings before. I should probably give her a heads up.)
