Sorry, Kids, a Work Ethic Means Less LiveJournal (or) No News is Good News?

Jun 17, 2008 14:24

Um, hey.

So I have been relatively busy during the past few weeks, getting work done at my job, for which I am paid.

I've watched the NBA finals, cooked a fair amount, and gone running.  I am now officially training for a half-marathon, which I plan to run sometime in late August.  If

Thanks honey! I do me best... when I actually get around to writing. :)

I miss you! I hear you'll be back in the country soon. We should meet up as long as we're in the same hemisphere!

And don't worry too much about not being able to make decisions. It's not important. Or wait, maybe it is important? I can't figure out which I want to choose...

Right now I'm just staring at a big blank wall, hoping a gate will appear somewhere. Well, moreso hoping several gates will appear so I have options, but let's not get greedy.

What constitutes training for a half-marathon? What is a half-marathon, exactly?

A half-marathon is half of a marathon (26.2 / 2 = 13.1). It's the second- or third-longest "standard distance" race.

As I understand it, after sprints, races are:

1 mile
5K
10K
1/2 Marathon
Marathon
Ultramarathon (anything longer than 26.2 miles; mostly for the crazy)

A half-marathon takes most people two hours and change to run; it will probably take me 2.5 hours.

When you train for a half-marathon, your goal is to increase your weekly mileage and the mileage in your "long run." Last week I ran about 13 miles total, with a long run of 5.5 miles. This week I will run about 19 miles total, with a long run of 6.5 miles. I will continue building my long run over the next two months until I reach around 12 miles; then I'll taper down and run the race.

It should be fun... I hope!

That sounds intense. Good luck.

I am attempting not to think about such gates. Boo to real life.
But I *would* like you to know that I will be coming to Boston, and will expect great fun starting Friday.

Huzzah! Will you please forward me your travel plans? What nights are you staying with me? We should go over this crap on the phone so that I can think of something awesome for us to do.

Cheers,

A.

I get in today at 5:50-ish, stay at Joni's tonight and Wednesday night (you are on emergency duty, just in case our cell phones collapse or she decides to abandon me for sex, drugs, and rock and roll, although I think that's unlikely, since she promises me I'm in her day planner). Then some as yet undetermined time on Friday, I switch from Joni's place to yours. Then I leave Monday at 2:30.
I'm leaving in about an hour, and will be on either a train or a bus until 6-ish, but my phone should be on.

The term probably derives from the sort of gate that puts the "blinking lights" back into "computer science".

Luckily, life is way less deterministic.

Nice! I feel better about gates knowing that transistors are involved. Now if only I could get a few more vacuum tubes of coffee into my system...

I hope life is less deterministic. Recently I've just been haunted by the knowledge that no matter what you take up - no matter how interesting or challenging or exciting it is - you inevitably leave many other things behind. Running this half-marathon means I won't be going out with friends as much. Being a travel consultant - even for a year - means that I won't be designing as many sets, or even directing shows.

And the longer I stay with the choices I've made, the harder it will be to change them. I'm just worried that I'll be one of those stodgy middle-aged people who say things like, "I wish I had done more when I was your age... Back when I could ( ... )
