So, this is the current list of schools I am planning to apply to. I still have to e-mail professors and everything, but as some are repeats from last year -grumble swear grumble- then I already know I'm a fit

Have you looked at UCSC in a great deal of depth? If you look at my list of schools within my journal (shameless plug) you'll see somewhere in there that I was initially very excited about the program but, upon mentioning it to others, came to learn it has a pretty nasty reputation for its inability to offer funding to the same degree as similar departments. I'm wondering (as this information came to me mostly from current profs or newly minted PhDs) if maybe that's started to change and my info is a bit outdated. I'd love to put them back on my shortlist, but I can't imagine dealing with financial concerns on top of other doctoral woes.

I've not looked too much at the funding, honestly. It's somewhat of a long-shot school, I think, and I'm really hoping to be going overseas. So while I know a lot about funding in, say, Limerick - I've not really sorted myself out on this side.

That said, I will def. look into it because you're right - it's gonna be hard enough without frantically attempting to make ends meet. Didn't we get enough of that in undergrad? ;)
