Advent Drabblender, Day 5 (because the muse refuses to work in order)

Title: Shopping Spree
'Verse: Magnolias
Characters: Raye, Kevin
Time Frame: Post-ER
Rating: PG

"Why do I have to come with you again?" The voice is male, harassed-sounding in the way of every aggrieved man being dragged along during a female shopping spree. "You're buying stuff for a baby shower. I know nothing about what goes on in such events." The larger set of footprints leave skid-marks on the snowy sidewalk as the female drags him none-too-gently along by the wrist. "I don't even know Aditi Desmond, aside from by name and reputation. I don't know what she likes. And she's having a girl. I know nothing about girls!" Had it been any other male other than Kevin Ellis, the whine in the tone would have reached pouty toddler pitch. "Why can't Jake come with you?"

"Because Jake's got work, and besides, I'm here to help you pick out something for Mina," Raye says brightly. Against the backdrop of white snow and pearlescent streetlights, her red woolen coat glows like a Christmas cardinal. Where Kevin is shuffling his feet and hunched against the wind, she strides forward purposefully, chin raised. "You've been with her for five years now, so you'd better get her something better than a bunch of grocery store flowers or a stupid gift card or something."

"I didn't plan on getting her a bunch of grocery store flowers or a stupid gift card," Kevin grouses and blinks snow out of his pale eyelashes. They pause in front of a lavish display in front of an antique store, and he sighs, then meets Raye's eyes. His storm-gray gaze is candid, more unguarded than she's ever seen him, and uncharacteristically uncertain. "I'm gonna marry her one day if she'll have me."

For the space of two whole minutes, they just stand there in the snow, surprised violet eyes meeting slightly scared, slightly mutinous gray ones. And then Raye smiles-- beams, really.

"She'll have you, you big blond idiot," she murmurs, tucking her leather-gloved hand into his bigger one and giving it a squeeze before tugging him towards the shop's doors. "Maybe we should be looking at rings while we're in here."

"Uhh, maybe... later?" Kevin manages to squeak as Raye's footsteps pick up their pace. Underneath the carefully blank face is a hint of abject terror in his eyes. "Why are you so excited? This isn't happening yet!"

"But it will!" Raye tossed over her shoulder as she made a beeline for the jewelry display. "So, hey, do I get to be Best Man?"

Kevin's only response was a moan.
