Question for the Doctor Who fandom

Jun 27, 2007 09:47

OK, I've got to ask. *What* is up with everybody suddenly posting major spoilers for recently aired Doctor Who episodes without putting them behind text cuts? Why is it that it looks like *everybody* who watches Doctor Who has suddenly decided that if an episode has aired in the UK, it is fair game to talk about major developments (like appearances ( Read more... )

Word.

And the icon spoilers are EVERYWHERE, too.

Yes, icons, too! It's gotten so that I try not to even pay attention to icons at all, just in case I get spoiled.

I love your icon, by the way. I still miss Nine... *hugs him to herself*

Speaking of Nine, I can't help but compare this wave of spoilers with the way the fandom handled the transition between Nine and Ten, and I'm having a hard time deciding if it was just easier for me to handle the spoilers because I'd already seen the episodes, or if people really *were* more careful back then. I could *swear* people were more careful, though! I know I personally went to considerable effort to put any reference to Ten behind a cut for *months* afterward.

I just don't understand what has happened since then to change this!

I'm glad I'm the only one who is having trouble with the spoilers. :)

I think people were more careful. I wasn't ahem-ing Nine, so I had to wait a bit to see the finale, and I did NOT get spoiled without ASKING to be spoiled.

::shrug:: I think people are more casual in general about spoilers, since nearly everything is ahem-able now; there's some assumption we all go ahem immediately and watch within a day or two.

I'm sorry. I put my spoilery comments behind cuts, but I did refer to the existence of a certain character outside them. I suspect this was because it was all over the internet months ago, and because, as you say, everyone else is mentioning it quite openly.

I have edited my two offending posts.

I think the general openness just affected people without them realising it. [hangs head] As the other commenter said, there are icons being offered everywhere, so I think the slackness is infectious.

People do have different definitions of spoilers. Some people don't mind knowing things that don't ruin the plot of a story; others don't even want to know a snippet of witty dialogue that has nothing to do with the plot because it might ruin their enjoyment of said dialogue when it pops up (and fair enough too). So I tend to put almost everything behind a cut except for whether I liked an ep or not. The character and casting rumour was everywhere for months, a lot of my flist is posting icons and fics, and I was slack with those two posts. I shall be a lot more careful in future. :-)

*hugs* Thank you!

And heh, that is a very appropriate icon! *smiles at it, even though I've never actually watched B7*

I'm sorry if I made you feel defensive. I know you are usually very careful about spoilers, and I could tell it was the general attitude in the fandom that was the problem, and not any one person. Certainly, you are much better about spoilers than most of the people in the fandom, and I'm very grateful to you for that. :)

And by the way, (to completely change the subject *g*) I just this week saw Paprika, the most recent anime movie by the same person who made Millenium Actress and Perfect Blue. Every time I see an anime movie these days, I think of you. ;) I really enjoyed this movie, although I think Millenium Actress is still my favorite. Have you watched it? I hope it gets shown in your neck of the woods soon -- I think you would like it, too. :)

i think folks forget that not everyone watches immediately, no matter what side of the Atlantic they're on. :::leaves you chocolate:::

i saw the link for that story but haven't read it yet.

Who fandom seems to have an extra-special sense of entitlement to it...maybe that's from being so old a fandom, i dunno, but they do seem to run a little more roughshod over the niceties than other fandoms i skirt the edges of.

Thank. You. *has had the exact same problem*

I mean, I still haven't seen most of last season, but I'm okay with people posting spoilers for those (even though I personally wouldn't, because I'm one of those people who still cuts for FS spoilers), because yeah, it's been awhile. But, this season? This week?! WTF?

I wonder if it has something to do with the assumption I've seen in various fandoms over the last year or two -- that everyone has broadband. Dear internets: some of us are still on dial-up, kthx, and thus can't download something the moment it airs. *grumble*

One of the other Australians on my friendslist just commented today that she was glad I was watching it on TV (new season starts here tonight), because nobody else on her friendslist is going to be watching it for the first time when it airs on telly. It seems like everyone is watching it off the internets.

*hugs you for the helluvit*

Yeah, these days I also try to be as careful as I can be about spoilers for any series, no matter how old, but I know there is no way to avoid mentioning spoilers for older series altogether. Different people have different definitions of spoilers, and I make allowances for that. But come on, spoilers for things that aired *this week* -- that's totally a spoiler by *any* definition! Isn't it?

And yeah, I thought about you when I saw all the spoilers start popping up everywhere. At least I *have* the episodes and I've just been too lazy to watch them, so I technically only have myself to blame for being spoiled. You don't even have the option of watching them!

*hugs you back* I'm sorry about all the spoilers around! I promise to try to be careful with the series that I do watch. :)

Well, I have myself to blame for the fact that I only saw an ep or two from last season -- started taping eps with the intention of watching them, fell further and further behind, and eventually ended up not bothering to tape the second half of the season. So lazy. So very, very lazy. *g*

I promise to try to be careful with the series that I do watch. :)

Aww, thanks. And hey, just looking at the titles of your recent posts in your sidebar -- Life on Mars! Woot! *is currently enjoying muchly*

Your icon has reminded me: are you familiar with Bart's recent canon?

Yeah, I stopped watching in the middle of the last season of Doctor Who -- it just wasn't as engaging as it used to be. But people were so enthusiastic about this latest season that I got all the episodes and started watching again. I haven't gotten to the episodes everybody is currently raving about, but judging by other people's reactions, I probably should. *g*

Life on Mars! Yay! I still haven't watched all of the second season -- I have all the episodes, I just... got distracted, I guess. (I am easily distractible ;) ) But I really enjoyed the first season! Did you know they are planning to make an American version of it? I shudder to think what they will come up with...
