Interview To A Kill

Feb 03, 2010 17:07

Whoa, I had an interview today! That's only my second real one since 2005 or thereabouts. It was even more surprising given that I only applied for the position at about 11am this morning. The guy liked that I used the word "overgnomes" in my cover letter and recognized that I would probably be a quick learner, but had some very reasonable ( Read more... )

Congrats!

If you want entire books, I can't recommend the HeadFirst series enough. I know they have a PHP book; not sure about the others. If you want an overview of recent developments, that won't work, since it's for learning from the ground up, but ... like I say, I recommend them.

Provisional congrats on the good vibes of the interview.

When you say "investigate the latest advances in..." what is your background level of knowledge in the area?

I know a bit about PHP and MySQL, having to work in that sort of coding environment. I get the impression that Ajax is not that hard to get a handle on if your Javascript is up to snuff (which mine, frankly, isn't; although I am familiar with the basic principles). I know nowt about JQuery or CakePHP (is that real?! It reminds me of that old Brass Eye skit "Cake is a Made Up Drug")

Not only is CakePHP apparently real, you get to "bake" stuff while using it, which is quite exciting. At root it's some kind of attempt to replicate the nicest bits of Ruby on Rails for PHP, I think. I guess I'll try to put together a basic site using one of the online tutorials and see what happens.

Ah, in that case there may be some mileage in reading up on whatever David HH (he who invented Rails, can't remember what the HH is for) has been writing about lately. He's very quotable - perfect job interview stuff.

Congrats on the interview - sorry, know nothing about the techy devilry of which you write.

Good luck with the interview! I know nothing of this technicality of which you speak, but I'm sure you shall be the perfect choice as exploitable foreign labour, taking our jobs &c &c.

"Overgnomes" as a noun or as a verb?
