Character: Frau
Timeline:Chapter 64, Frau is with Teito in a Hawkzile race on the way to the capital of the Barsburg Empire.
Personality:For a Bishop, Frau is very inappropriate. He is loud, makes too many jokes, and had an extensive pornography stash throughout the temple. He hits on women on a regular basis and is a chain smoker. Enough so that he converted the cross that hands around his neck into a lighter. Fellow Bishop Castor often does his best to keep Frau in line, but Frau doesn't usually heed his orders. It tends to result in Frau being physically assaulted, but the damage is never serious.
Despite all of these traits that make him stand out against his religion, Frau is well-loved in his church. He can often be found with the orphaned children that stay there generally being used as their jungle gym. Despite his stand-off-ish and somewhat intimidating features, he is a huge hit with those kids. His attachment to them could very well be a product of his own circumstances as an orphan when he was growing up.
For the most part, Frau keeps a generally aloof outlook concerning the events that occur around him. It doesn't seem like it, but he pays close attention to all that happens around him and the people he cares about that can be potentially significant or dangerous. He seems to have reckless behavior, but his choices in acting that way usually turn out to be done for the greater purpose of his and Teito's adventure.
Frau is a very loving man. He stands up for what he believes in and, effectively, puts down those who stand against him. It is in his nature to go as far as he possibly can for those that he cares about. He has come to what seems like a strong faith. When he battles, he says to his enemies 'May God be with you.'
Despite his strong devotions and commitments to the people around him, Frau is a somewhat secretive man. For the most part he keeps a fair amount of distance between himself and those that depend on him. He is closer to his fellow Bishops because they understand his circumstances. His hesitance to get closer to the general public is shown through his struggles with his constant companion Teito.
Background: Frau was brought to his church at a young age. He was the last remaining person from his home, an orphan because of the war that tore the countries apart. He was not the only victim of the Raggs War, nor was he the last. He was adamant against becoming a part of the church when he arrived and he made that evident throughout all of his struggles against Bastian, the man that took him in at the church and later became his mentor. He would cause all kinds of trouble and generally refuse to follow any kind of instruction when it was given to him. He refuses to do anything for the church. However, he decided to sneak out of the church one night and purify a soul that was possessed by a Kor, which was the general mission of the church. Bastian learns of this and presses Frau harder to become a part of the clergy. Sooner rather than later, Frau concedes and takes the exam to become a part of the clergy. During his final trial of the exam, his battle with a Kor is so intense that he destroys the area and all other students are forced to retake the exam. To this day Frau holds the record for the fastest time in completing the arduous exam.
Years pass and Frau stays at the church as one of its Bishops. He is a part of what the locals call the Seven Ghosts. Among the people of the church there is an old legend that there were seven disciples of God that were sent to the earth to fight and restrain the powers of Verloren, who is their worlds version of Lucifer. Verloren came to the earth to corrupt the souls of the people there and make them his own, turning them into Kor. Kor are beings who were once human spirits but have been corrupted by their own desires. Their purpose is to gather more followers to their ranks. Once a person becomes a full-fledged Kor, they can no longer return to Heaven.
The seven ghosts that were sent to combat Verloren were made in his image. By their powers combined, they sealed Verloren away, taking his scythe and the source of his power from him and passing it between the seven of them to keep it safe. Zehel, which is the ghost that Frau embodies, is the current host to Verloren's scythe. This is generally hazardous to the host. The scythe feeds on the souls of others. If it is not fed, it corrupts the body that holds it and that host loses all hold on the person they once were and essentially also become a Kor. Frau constantly feels the pressure of the scythe's desire. The purer the soul, the more the scythe hungers for it. Frau had a constant reminder of how precarious his hold is on the darkness that resides in his soul: Teito. Teito literally fell out of the sky and straight into Frau's life. It didn't take long for Teito to become likely one of the most important people to Frau. He sees Teito as his light, his only way out of the darkness that has encompassed his soul over his extended life time. However, because Teito's soul is so pure, Frau is constantly putting himself in check to prevent himself from killing what he sees as his only chance at survival in the kind of personal hell that he lives in.
As the name suggests, none of the Ghosts are alive. Frau's body is dead. It has been since Zehel chose him for a host. He cannot produce body heat or get sick. He also has no heart beat. He can be wounded and killed again. He doesn't technically need to eat to live, but he does so to keep up the appearance that he is, in fact, still a living being. He is so effectively convincing in this act that it takes Teito until very recently in the series to realize that Frau really isn't a human. This is surprising because Teito spent almost every moment of his life since he came to the church with Frau.
Whether or not spending that much time with each other was either Frau or Teito's choice is unlikely. Teito was brought to the church as a slave and when Frau tried to remove the collar around Teito's neck , the device took a sample of his blood and recognized Frau as Teito's new master. Because of this, if Frau spends too much time away from Teito, the collar will choke and kill him. Thus the two of them spending as much time with each other as they do. This situation also promotes Frau into becoming Teito's mentor in his exams to become a part of the clergy.
Once Teito does pass his test, he and Frau leave the clergy to fulfill Teito's quest to avenge his murdered best friend. Frau accompanies Teito on his journey and keeps a general eye out for the boy while also trying to keep his growing desire to consume his soul in check. In order to get over the border without being spotted (Teito is technically a wanted criminal and even Frau's evidence of being a Bishop isn't enough to smuggle him across the border), the two of them don disguises and join a race across the seven regions of the country they live in. During a stretch of the race where the weather is frigid, Frau's body slowly loses the heat he trapped in and locks up, threatening to turn to ice and kill him.
Teito manages to get Frau to the check point in the race and it is here that he witnesses Frau devouring another beings soul for the first time. By witnessing this, he alerts Frau to his presence and is nearly consumed himself. Between Teito's sheer force of will and determination and Frau's desire to not harm him, Teito manages to get out of this situation with his soul intact. He learns that Frau had been feasting on the souls of the Kor he eliminated along the way to keep the scythe's powers at bay. Teito then demands that Frau stop hiding things from him and that, if he really wants to, that he can eat his soul. Teito goes on to explain that, no matter what, he would continue to fight as hard as he could for the both of them so Frau didn't have to worry about being consumed by the darkness that resides in his soul.
That same night, Frau finds that Castor and another Bishop by the name of Laborador (both are also Ghosts) had been following them. They also declare that they will help Frau in his endeavors to leave Teito's soul pure and untouched and also give him a coat that produces its own heat so they can continue the race. The next day, when Frau and Teito continue the race. As they are passing over an old relic engraved in the hills, Teito feels a connection to his lost memories flare up and he faints, falling off of the hawkzile.
Abilities/Additional Notes:
Attack Zaiphon: A form of magic in their world. There are three different types: Attack, Defense, and Healing Zaiphon. Frau specializes in attack zaiphon and is extremely skilled, as established by his destructive power during his exams to become a part of the clergy. Zaiphon draws from the energy of the world around the user in order to either defend the user, heal the user or another, or attack another.
Verloren's Scythe: Because Frau is the current host for the scythe, he can release the seal on the scythe and pull it out of his body whenever he pleases and can wield it as a weapon. It comes with it's own dangers since it is connected to the largest evil in their world. It is slowly corrupting Frau's soul.
Exorcism: Frau has the ability to remove negative spirits from another person using a form of healing zaiphon that is taught to those that reach the rank of Bishop. However, it seems as if Frau had intuitive knowledge of this Zaiphon before he even took the exam to be a part of the clergy. It is shown when he sneaks out of the church and purifies the soul a stubborn rich man's child.
Frau is also skilled at hand-to-hand combat and knows all scriptures by heart.
Sample Journal Post:
[The video being transmitted is dark. The flare of a tiny fire followed by the somewhat steady glow of a lit cigarette are the only things that show there is something living on the other end of that screen.]
S'kinda difficult to see what you're doin' when it's dark as the belly of Verloren hisself.
[The steady thump, thump, thump of footsteps is heard before the view is set awash in moonlight. The light reveals a somewhat skewed video of a tall man dressed in a dark jacket with a shock of blond hair.]
There we go. [A smirk] Tha's what I'm talkin 'bout.
[He looks around.] This place looks like crap. Gone from one hell to another huh? [A grin slowly pulls around the cigarette butt in his mouth.] Bring it on.
Sample RP:
Frau yawned lazily and scratched the back of his head as he walked down the hall way of the so very familiar church that had long since become his home. Just another day in the neighborhood as far he was concerned. Much like every other day, he wondered what it would bring. Hopefully not too much work and not too much of Castor. That way he could get some good quality reading time in. But more important things came first, even if there wasn't much more important than his precious collection.
He walked out into the grassy area outside the church, smiled a little at the happily gurgling fountain and then up at the clouds floating peacefully by. The sound of laughter reached his ears, followed by a chorus of “Bishop Frau!” Soon he was bombarded by all the children in the vicinity. Laughing he swung a couple around in a circle before letting them climb onto his shoulders.
Today was a good day. Even if the darkest throws of humanity and all that lie beyond threatened to shatter this peace at any given moment, he wouldn't let these children feel the devil's sting. It was his duty and his desire. As long as they kept laughing, he could find the drive to keep going, keep fighting against the darkness that threatened them all.
