I LOVE the New York voting machines. So reassuringly old-fashioned, so satisfying when you pull that lever. You wonder if people voted for like, Alfred E Smith on those machines, though I'm sure they aren't that old.
I know! I love that feeling of history too. (I think these machines must mostly date from the 1960s, btw...) And the heavy physicality of that lever makes it feel like your vote really COUNTS. Those Shoup machines have a lot of flaws - paper records would be nice for a start, since anyone who walks behind the machine can just twirl the odometer however they like (nice!) - but they just make it feel so good!
That looks familiar. I think it took 45+ minutes to vote there in 2000. I don't remember how far outside the building the line went though, except that I was definitely in line outside the building.
