Found this a little late, but wanted to let you know I really enjoyed it -- dead-on characterization of Sam, in particular. :D

That was brilliant. Beautifully written, so very Sam, so very real. I really want to say something more, but it's sent me a bit incoherent. There wasn't a part of it I didn't love. Excellent character study. And I'm going to shut up now as I'm not really saying anything.

(Echoing the love of Gene's "Piss or get off the pot" - that was perfect. The choice was Sam's. Same with Annie - loved that. Him trying to appreciate her the way he thought she would expect to be appreciated but never being able to completely let his guard down and get close.)

This is the second time I've read this story and I can't believe that I didn't comment first time around...my very bad, because I love this! It's just so SAM, in every way (as others have rightly commented!) that matters. I love this kind of introspective angle - it's kind of what you used to get in the days when we had such things as 'Tie-In Novels' that actually gave you the story of whatever show it was based on, but with more insight. I would love to have seen the key elements of LoM fictionalised in this way... but since it isn't likely to happen its damn good that we have fanfic writers like you, who seem to 'get' it and put it down for the rest of us to enjoy. Thank you!

Can't believe I neglected to comment on this when you first published it, because it's a really exquisite story. You capture perfectly Sam's perpetually cautious/controlled/neurotic/repressed little ways. And I love how the last vignette is so sweetly hopeful, with Sam finally daring to live.

Thank you!

Thank you! Sam is one of those characters that I've always seen as being the biggest enemy to his own happiness, with all his, as you say, cautious/controlled/neurotic/repressed little ways. He's such as fascinating character to explore. *g*
