Regarding college

Oct 07, 2008 10:17

For what might actually be the 100th time, someone in my class asked "...but what is art?" and thought they were breaking new ground.

When I graduate from this place, I'm going to scrub the academia from my mind so thoroughly that my brain stem will bleed.

Wait'll you get into the commercial art field and no one will even talk about art. Also, the advantages of working in commercial art as opposed to traditional art: You're an average guy and not a crazy bi-polar suffering artists and the only anti-depressants you'll need will be to deal with your unapologetic douchebag of a boss with delusions of compotence.

See that you do, you'll need to in order to maintain your own creative soul.

Art school is one of those "learn the rules so you know how/why you are breaking them" kind of things. And yes, every year, in every art school everywhere, someone asks "what is art?" and thinks they have just discovered fire. Hopefully, they discover some of their own.

That question is necessary -- even essential -- but it's a paradox because it has both no answer, and every answer. It's like Zen. What is the sound of one art-school douchebag comtemplating?

If a pretentious art-school douchenozzle makes a pretentious statement alone in the woods, does it make a sound?

Hahaha!

I can't imagine the context in which that question would be warranted. What brings it up?

We were discussing whether or not craft work like basket weaving or bead work would be considered art, then the pretentious art-school academic douchebaggery began.
