(In response to this article.)

Fan fiction is a work created by a fan of that work or even someone who is not all that familiar with the original text. It explores ideas, concepts, and settings set forth by the original author. These ideas include characters, plotlines, and typical action-based sequences you might see in the original work ( Read more... )

Wow. What a needlessly inflammatory and poorly thought through article you've found!

The only difference between fan-fiction and normal fiction is that fan-fiction writers give credit to their sources. I jest, but only just.
The greeks did it first, as they say. It's not about finding something that hasn't been done, it's about doing whatever it is you chose to do well, doing it better.

Even weirder is his assertion that pop culture is collapsing in on itself, reproducing fanfiction of fanfiction... Which to my knowledge has only happened the once.
And even considering that... it's not like this is plagerism. For god's sake, a hundred people could paint a picture of the same dude and not one of them would look the same as another. Should we forbid artists to ever paint the same subject as well?

Jeez...

I know, preaching to the choir, but boy was that a troll... >:(

I feel you, Alfred. Reading the article made me feel just a little bitter. He basically suggests that no one is original and that society is falling apart due to our lack of original culture which is just not true! It's actually depressing that he seems to think so.

The argument has presented itself in a multitude of ways at this point: is anything really original anymore? And the answer to that is with over a billion people populating this planet, there's no way that what you think is your work is something that no one else ever thought of. However, I think this means that a re-defining of the word 'original' is in order!
