As I suggest to everyone with a stomach for some good, healthy political history, you must also read "Anti-Intellectualism in American Life" - it won a Pulitzer in the 60s, but it's such a good run-down of the long history of binaries in American politics (in this case, of course, "intellectuals" and "anti-intellectuals"). And I agree with you heartily, the conservative/liberal nomenclature has been through the mill.
