These are all the important characters shown and/or mentioned in this episode and all the backstory you need to know about them (along with a couple bonus facts at the end). Aaron Echolls, a famous movie star who had a history of violence and extramarital affairs, had an affair two years ago with his son's girlfriend at the time, Lilly Kane. This was going well for both of them (except for the under-18 factor and the cheating-on-your-boyfriend-with-his-FATHER factor) until she found out that he had been secretly taping their encounters, presumably for his private collection. Thrilled, she stole the latest few tapes and took them home with her, planning to get the attention of her parents and the world by leaking the tapes to the media. Aaron's entire reputation was on the line, and he panicked and hit her with a heavy ashtray which killed her.
Veronica Mars was Lilly Kane's best friend. Nobody suspected Aaron as Lilly's murderer until Veronica found the sex tapes hidden in Lilly's room more than a year after her death and deduced what had happened. Unfortunately, Aaron had also been in Lilly's room looking for the tapes, and he was hiding in the closet watching as she found them. When she left the Kane house, he hid in the back of her car. She crashed the car and ran away, but he followed her, knocked her unconscious, and locked her in an old refrigerator, where he threatened to set her on fire if she did not tell him where the tapes were.
Keith Mars, Veronica's father, used to be sheriff and is now a private investigator. He went to find Veronica the night that she discovered the Aaron/Lilly sex tapes, and found her locked in the refrigerator covered in gasoline while Aaron threatened her. He and Aaron fought, Aaron lit the gasoline on fire, and Keith ran through the fire to save Veronica, sustaining burns in the process.
Don Lamb has been sheriff since Keith was voted out of office for accusing a well-loved local billionaire, Lilly Kane's father, of Lilly's murder. Although this accusation turned out to be false, it was based on legitimate evidence and solid investigative work. Perhaps because of his predecessor's fate, Lamb seems to try his best to avoid much investigative work at all and to only support theories that are safe and obvious, although they are also often wrong.
Woody Goodman is Neptune's mayor and owner of a baseball team, the Sharks. He and Keith recently had a confrontation, when Woody falsely pinned a scandal on Keith in order to preserve his own reputation.
Gia Goodman, the mayor's daughter, is friends with Veronica. Recently, Veronica helped Gia track down a stalker who was taking creepy videos of her family: it turned out to be Lucky, the school janitor, who said that he did it because Gia's father is a horrible person.
Lucky, the janitor, spent time as a soldier, where he was injured several times but never too badly (thus the nickname). He was very involved in a class war in Neptune last summer, along with Logan Echolls.
Logan Echolls is Aaron's son and was Lilly's boyfriend. Around Christmas last year, he found out that the Aaron/Lilly sex tapes had been stolen and that they might be sold to the media. In order to prevent that from ever happening in the future, he bought the tapes from the person who had stolen them, watched them so that he could testify about their content, and then erased them.
Logan and Veronica dated last summer, and they still have unresolved romantic feelings towards each other, although various events keep coming between them.
Wallace Fennel has been Veronica's best friend since she cut him down from a flagpole on his first day of school (he had been put there by Weevil's motorcycle gang because he reported them for stealing from the convenience store where he worked). He has a basketball scholarship to Neptune's local college, Hearst.
Jackie Cook lived with her mother in New York until this year, when she came to Neptune to live with her father. At first, they barely saw each other, but since he has been in the hospital recently, they have finally been growing close.
Jackie and Wallace recently started dating. Although they are pretty serious already, she has been accepted to the Sorbonne in France and plans to leave for there in a couple of weeks.
Terrence Cook, Jackie's father, used to be a famous baseball star. However, it was recently revealed to the public that he threw an important game in order to pay off huge gambling debts, which means he is likely shunned from the sports world. He is currently in the hospital, since he was shot breaking into his ex-girlfriend's house to try to destroy a manuscript she was writing telling about how he threw the game. He is also in police custody, because he is accused of causing a bus full of high school children to crash into the ocean.
Mr. Lobo is the owner of multiple casinos. He is the one who Terrence's gambling debt is owed to, and the one who forced Terrence to throw the game.
Eli "Weevil" Navarro has been in high school for more than four years. However, for most of that time he was more involved with being the leader of a local motorcycle gang than with his studies. This year, he was kicked out of the motorcycle gang, but spent a lot of time tracking down the killer of a close friend. The killer was the motorcycle gang's new leader, Thumper. Weevil avenged his friend by framing Thumper for stealing money from his violence-prone drug dealers, which led directly to Thumper's death. To do this, Weevil first had to attack Thumper and render him unconscious, and two young boys in a nearby van saw this happen.
Weevil believes that his grandmother is trying to stay alive long enough to see him graduate, and it is only for her sake that he has stayed in school at all.
Cassidy used to date Mac, but he broke up with her in a seeming overreaction to her questions about why they were not going farther sexually.
Mac is Veronica's friend. She is smart and good with computers, and she is still very fond of Cassidy even though they are broken up.

- Recently, one of Aaron's Oscars was found buried in Lilly Kane's backyard, with Lilly's blood and the hair of Duncan Kane, her brother. We know that the hair was taken from Duncan's shower by a woman working with Aaron. It is unclear whether the Oscar was the real murder weapon or was also planted.
