These are all the important characters shown and/or mentioned in this episode and all the backstory you need to know about them. Of course, a lot of important character development is not included here, so for a full understanding of the characters, we recommend finding the Season 1 DVDs at your local video store. Keith Mars used to be the sheriff of Neptune, California. When Lilly Kane, daughter of a beloved billionaire, was murdered, Keith suspected Lilly's father, which made the town turn against him. He was voted out of office and became a private investigator, where he continued to investigate Lilly's death, even though a man who had confessed to the murder was already in jail. It turned out that Keith was correct that the person already in jail was innocent, although it took his 17-year-old daughter Veronica to finally figure out who the real killer was.
Logan Echolls was the ex-boyfriend of the murdered Lilly. After Lilly's death, he became very destructive, especially towards Veronica. As time went on, however, he began to develop respect for Veronica, and when his mother committed suicide he asked Veronica for help in finding out whether his mother was really dead. This brought them closer together, and they became romantically involved. However, when new information led Veronica to suspect Logan as Lilly's killer, they broke up and he was last seen teetering drunkenly on the same bridge that his mother jumped from.
Veronica Mars had a normal, happy life until her best friend Lilly was murdered. In the aftermath of the murder, her father was voted out of office as sheriff, her former friends turned against her, and her mother abandoned the family. Veronica felt that if she could find Lilly's killer she would finally be able to have her old life back. And she did finally find the killer, after a year of investigation: it was Aaron Echolls, Logan's father. Unfortunately, Aaron knew that she knew, and he threatened and almost killed Veronica and Keith before he was finally arrested. (not pictured this episode) Lianne Mars, Veronica's mother, was an alcoholic. Veronica spent her savings on enrolling Lianne in a treatment program, but Lianne left the program early and continued to drink heavily, while lying to her family about it. When Veronica found out about this, she told Lianne to leave. Lianne did leave, but stole a $50,000 check (which would have been Veronica's college money) on the way out.
Weevil is the leader of the PCH motorcycle gang. Veronica and Weevil have helped each other out on multiple occasions, including Veronica getting Weevil out of jail twice.
Felix is a member of the PCH gang, and a good friend of Weevil's.
Wallace Fennel, Veronica's best friend, is a star basketball player at their high school. Wallace's mom is dating Veronica's dad.
Duncan Kane was Veronica's first boyfriend, but he broke up with her with no explanation after he found out that his father had had an affair with her mother and that they might be brother and sister. However, a paternity test finally showed that Keith was Veronica's real father, and the last time she saw Duncan (the night she discovered Lilly's murderer) she told him this. Duncan's parents are on trial for covering up the investigation to Lilly's murderer, because they had thought Duncan killed her in an epileptic fit and they didn't want him to go to jail.
Meg is Veronica's friend that Duncan started dating last year, when he still thought he and Veronica were related.
Van Clemmons is the school's vice principal.
The journalism teacher, Ms. Dumas, is played by Naima Mora, who won Cycle 4 of America's Next Top model.
Dick Casablancas is a rich jackass who is friends with Logan.
Cassidy Casablancas is Dick's younger brother.
