These are all the important characters shown and/or mentioned in this episode and all the backstory you need to know about them. Of course, a lot of important character development is not included here, so for a full understanding of the characters, we recommend finding the Season 1 DVDs at your local video store. Veronica Mars has done some investigative work in the past, because her father is a P.I., but lately she has been trying to get away from that sort of stuff and get her life back to normal. In the name of normality, she went on a field trip with her journalism class. But on the way home from her field trip, the bus which she was supposed to be on (and had been on minutes before) drove off a cliff and fell into the ocean below.
Duncan Kane is Veronica's boyfriend. He used to date Meg Manning, and when he broke up with Meg and started dating Veronica (though there were several months in between), Meg was very hostile towards Veronica. Meg was on the bus when it crashed. She had been offered a space in the limo that other rich kids were taking, but she had declined it because she didn't want to be in the same car as Veronica and Duncan.
Keith Mars used to be the sheriff of Neptune, but he was kicked out of office for following a lead on a case that caused him to accuse a rich and powerful man in town of murder. When this happened both Keith and Veronica were ostracized, although because of the cruelty of high schoolers Veronica suffered the most.
Sheriff Don Lamb used to be Keith's deputy, but he was promoted when Keith was removed from office. He usually looks for the fastest, easiest explanation to any case, which causes him to jump to conclusions. He also is reluctant to investigate cases that seem like they will be messy, and he generally refuses to follow up promising leads unless they fit with theories he already has. Because of this, Veronica and Lamb have a history of antagonism.
Logan Echolls's mother killed herself last year and his father was recently arrested for the murder of Logan's long-time girlfriend. He and Veronica were romantically involved last summer, but eventually she broke up with him for being involved in dangerous and destructive class wars. He did not take it well.
Wallace Fennel is Veronica's best friend, and he is a basketball star at his school, which makes him fairly popular. He has helped Veronica with her cases many times, although he has never done any investigative work of his own.
Woody Goodman is running for county supervisor (the equivalent of mayor) of Neptune. He also owns a baseball team, the Sharks, and coaches the associated Little League team.
Terrence Cook is a famous baseball player who used to play for the Sharks.
Kendall Casablancas is the trophy wife of Big Dick Casablancas, a rich businessman. She is having an affair with Logan.
Dick Casablancas is Big Dick's son and Logan's friend.
Cassidy Casablancas is Dick's younger brother.
