Some years ago, there was an explosion in a plant near my house. At 2am. A firefighter woke me up and told me I had 5 minutes to leave my house... Try finding anything in complete darkness!
Even if I had a bag ready, unless it would have been just by the front door, I would not have found it :-(
I always think of these things went I can't do anything about it - like when I'm brushing my teeth or driving to work. I've certainly had enough time to prepare and I have the motivation - I just don't seem to have the focus to deal with it. And I really, really should...
I've only ever been ready to evacuate myself once in my life, it was when I was living at Mt Victoria, which is on the Blue Mountains in NSW Australia - near where all the fires happen. There were huge fires and we were told to prepare to evacuate if necessary, so I put the things that were important in my car as that was the only way for me (and every one else) to leave - it was so bad my husband at the time, was stopped by the police every evening for about four days, as only residents to Mt Vic were able to go through, the next town along you weren't able to get to. So I had the computer, photos and a few treasures stuffed toys in the car, didn't think about clothes or things like that. Luckily I didn't have to evacuate. The neighbours had a fire box wood stove, so every summer they cleaned it out and put their photos and documents in the fire box - their rational, keeps the fire in, so will keep the fire out if the house is burnt down! They owned we only rented. That was the year the Central Coast, were my brother and parents
( ... )
I was ready to evacuate my house a few years ago when a field fire got out of control and was about three houses away from mine. I grabbed the laptop, the hd from the PC (I couldn't leave behind my stories!), dog stuff (water bowl, food, towels), my passport, wallet and phone. That was it. This wasn't a natural disaster so I wouldn't be searching for food or anything, but there was that horrible thought that I could lose everything. Why can't I remember that feeling and do something about it now?
Thirty days of food is impressive! Of course I have more cat food than human food on hand, so at least we know Miss Maddie would be in comfort :). But I have no water saved and I have the room, so bad on me. I worry about keeping warm (ice storms are the greatest threat here) and not being able to have contact with the outside world, hence the hand charger for the phone. Sad that I think about some way to access tech more than I think about food to live on. I really need to examine my priorities.
You might consider buying a couple thick quilts. Those puppies are amazingly warm.
For years I had a super thick comforter (can't remember where I got it now), but I swear I could wrap that thing around me and survive in the Antarctic naked. Ended up giving it to my son who wanted it for his survival gear.
But in case of an ice storm, if you have a few really thick blankets, you might consider making an igloo sort of thing. Your body heat and Miss Maddie's will keep it nice and toasty inside.
Just make sure you have food that you don't have to heat to eat.
Next time you're at the store, simply buy a couple of gallons of water. They usually cost around a buck a gallon. Buy 5 and keep them in your basement (or in your laundry area). Just be sure to change them out every once in a while.

Something to ponder...
