There are five things that don't surprise Veronica Mars.
1. Logan gives good head.
Lilly probably tied him to her bed, spread her legs, and didn't let him go until he could do it right.
But this isn't how things begin. A couple weeks after the Echolls funeral, her phone starts ringing at two in the morning and the number is unknown, because it's Logan on the other end. "Come drive around with me." She pulls the covers over her head and asks him if he's okay in a soft, concerned voice. He mutters "Jesus Christ, just forget it" and hangs up on her.
Then three weeks after the funeral he calls her up again. She doesn't think about why he asks her; she thinks about how Duncan looks when he hears "I am the resurrection and the life" so she doesn’t blow Logan off when he’s acting really weird.
So she says yes once, and he starts showing up at her house every few days at three or four in the morning to talk her into going down to the beach. The first couple times, they just walk together in silence and Veronica thinks about how she wishes she was still in bed. The third time she brings a swim suit (one piece) and does laps while he stares at the moon. The fourth time, he says he'll answer five questions. Anything. Anything she wants to know about him. Her voice is what a director would call "incredulous" when she asks him if he's serious. He shrugs and glares at her.
She sits in the car and does her Spanish comp homework while he goes off. When he comes back, she says okay even though she told herself not to bring it up again.
He says he’s going to ask five questions, too. There is so much damage to be done with five questions, but they are gentle with one another.
She notices he opens her car door for her the next time he comes around.
Car doors lead to kisses when boys think they're in love with the girls who get out of bed in the middle of the night and put up their hoodies and come down to the beach when everything sucks. They know each other’s middle names now. One day he wraps his arm around her. She tenses up, but she's always tense.
A couple days later, they're trying to skip stones in the surf when he locks eyes with her and he doesn't waver, moving slowly toward her, intent outright. He presses himself to her and runs his hands through her hair. He says "I don't know why I want you," and she’s breathless to feel how hard and heartbroken he is.
She doesn’t know that he completely expected her to flip out and dig the palm of her hand into his chest to push him off fast. And scream. Or go silent. And start sleeping each night all the way through.
2. He hates California.
When his sister poses for Playboy everyone at school gives him shit. He gets catcalled, like it was him or something, and maybe those guys were his friends (his buds, his bros), but this is too good to pass up. Too funny. Trina, prone, mascara, trying to make her breasts look bigger.
Veronica wonders if it's more obvious that they're fucking when they ignore each other.
Every time she passes him in the halls, Logan looks like he's on the verge of putting his fist through the face of the next motherfucker who thinks he's so goddamn funny. Veronica sees Aaron signing autographs outside of the principle's office.
They sit on the hood of her car and he rips them apart. Their greed, the haircuts they got when his mother died. The things she said: "I’m trying to move on with my life, Logan!" or "I have a career to think about - Hollywood isn’t at my feet just because I’ve got Dad’s last name." The best: "She wasn’t my mother, Logan." He says: "They have no fucking dignity. They'll do anything. They're trash." and "I know how my sister shaves her pubic hair."
His dad almost went public with the Lilly story, as in, tragedy strikes the family of action star Aaron Echolls. Lurid, ruby-red tragedy. Lilly had great tits, Lilly had hot autopsy photos. But heart-breaking tragedy, imbuing him with emotional credibility, perhaps… If he had used her, if Entertainment Weekly wrote about it to make him look soulful, if he had black and white pictures taken, if her death made the public curious about Aaron Echolls in serious roles, if he got offered a part in an Ang Lee film, if he cried on screen...
"I would have. I would have burned down his house."
He runs his hands through his hair and she's keeping her mouth shut while he slumps under the mercilessness. When he snaps up and kicks her bumper, she scrambles down off the car and she is so not okay with this. "What the fuck, Logan!" He ignores her and keeps kicking her car, harder and harder. "Stop it, stop it, stop it, you asshole, why are you screaming at me and breaking my car -- are you convinced this is my fault, too? Jesus, you can’t pin this one on me. Calm the fuck down." She just keeps screaming and he just keeps beating in the hood of her car. He's getting skinnier and she could probably take him down, but she doesn't want to know if his fists would keep flying if she got in the immediate radius of his anger. She will suffer no nuance of abuse. Never again.
(She doesn’t know what he’ll do, and she disgusts herself for not being willing to find out.)
When he collapses, her headlights are fucked, the dents are undeniable, and his left ankle is bleeding through his Diesel jeans. He won't look at her and she isn't sure this is worth it. His jaw is set; he just says "I'll take you home and I'll take care of it."
She tells her dad that the engine or something was making funny noises and she dropped it off at the mechanic after school. He's impressed that she's taking responsibility for her auto repairs all by herself, and brags about it to Cliff McCormack over coffee.
Le Baron is sitting in front of her house three days later, downright tigerish. The paintjob looks better than it was when it was new. The tank is full, the carpet vacuumed, the AC fixed.
She doesn't find the note he left in the glove compartment for weeks, until a cop pulls her over for speeding and asks for her license and registration. Her name is humming through the police computer system when she finds "I know it's not really your fault, okay? Don't forget, it's not mine either."
3. He doesn't tell Duncan.
When Logan blurts out that he feels like he doesn't even know who Duncan is anymore, she doesn't tell him about the meds. Logan really should have figured that one out on his own.
4. No tattoos, no piercings.
He seems kind of shy the first time she takes his clothes off. He just can't keep his cool when she's pulling off his belt, loop by loop. She shimmies out of her jeans into his lap, and when he trembles, the daring of that kamikaze first kiss is long gone. She can have him weak for wanting her; he started this but it’s all in her hands now. She’s in control. She wraps her legs around his waist and feels him moaning "Veronica, Veronica, Veronica," low and hoarse in her ear as she grinds her hips to his and rakes her nails down his back.
They never make plans ahead of time, but she starts catnapping after school. He brings her mangos and avocados and they eat them with her pocket knife, dipping slices in the water that slips up to their feet.
He smokes her out and holds her hand as they amble through the surf. He promises her that one day they will successfully talk to Lilly on his Ouija board. He rambles about going to school in New England, where he'll be nouveau and tacky and no one will pay any attention to him. Some place where his friends' mothers are powerful, not beautiful. He'll buy Brooks Brother shirts and topsiders and not return his father's calls. When he asks her what she's going to do for college, she tells him she doesn't know because it really depends on money and how things work out for her and her dad over the next year. She's pretty sure he wants to say he'll take care of it for her. Which is funny, because they still don't talk to each other at school.
5. This will end badly.
His dad will catch them. Duncan will catch them. Her dad will catch them. Weevil will catch them. Wallace will catch them. She'll have to explain herself. No one will catch them. He'll give her a six month anniversary present (black pearls), and he’ll refuse to put out unless she'll go to dinner with him (two towns over). When she’ll spread her photocopies out on his bed and shows him the intricacy of the lies, he’ll hold her like he believes her.
