Have I ever broken someone’s heart?
There are two parts to the answer to that question: a) I’d like to think so and b) Jade Nguyen.
Jade. That name might not be recognizable; she’s better known as Cheshire. That name makes people shake their heads and quake in fear these days. That’s because Cheshire, Jade, dropped a nuclear bomb on a country, pretty much wiping it off the map.
And here’s where it gets better-she’s the mother of my child. This killer, this woman whose the world’s expert on poisons, gave me the greatest gift. Lian Harper.
How exactly did that happen? Well, I was sent to capture her. This was back when I did the whole spy thing for the CBI. It was the best gig going at the time. I had kicked heroin; going back to work with Ollie was out of the question. He’d kicked me out and words had been said. The Teen Titans just didn’t feel right and I wasn’t sure if Dick fully trusted me. He’d eventually fix that, but ya know…
Anyway, I was sent after Jade and boy, did I find her. She was the hottest thing in the sweaty hell hole I found her in. And she saw something in me. Maybe it was the fact that she was the only person who fully embraced me after my bout with smack. Maybe we just both knew what it was like to feel out of place and like we belonged nowhere. Whatever it was, I didn’t pull back.
We made lover, and talked, and screwed and laughed and fucked for days. Every now and then we’d come up for air. But, man could she set my body on fire with her golden skin that was begging to be touched and her hair, the color of midnight. In some ways, she was more intoxicating than heroin. But, I think we both knew it would end. One of us would have to leave or worse. I just chose to be first. I got up one night while she was sleeping and left. I couldn’t haul her in, no matter what the CBI said. So I booked.
I didn’t know until over a year later that I’d left a piece of me with her that would grow into Lian. But, that night I’d like to think my leaving hurt. I’d like to believe that my heart wasn’t the only one that was affected, the only one that was enthralled.
Either way, I got the best part of the deal. I got Lian.
