On the way a miracle: water become bone.

I love the earthiness of Old English riddles, particularly after today's wonderful lecture. Can you guess what this might be?

Today I had my first Vagina Monologues rehearsal. There was no space booked, so we had to stand in an echoing corridor in the basement of the union, while John fixed his eagle eye ( Read more... )

What the hell is York's problem? One of the oldest towns on the face of this spinning ball of mud, and when we get a day or two of water, it turns into Atlantis. Newcastle never gets such exciting weather.

Neither does Leeds. I think I'd rather be able to make a passing visit to somewhere with exciting weather rather than live there, though...

Urrgh, grammar, syntax, grammar, syntax. Yuck. One 'rather', please.

random unrelated comment just to point out that I replied to your house hunting comment then realised you might not check out the reply as its on quite an old post of mine.

Yes. Thank you hugely for that. Slightly worried now... I'm supposed to go tomorrow and look at it, but don't know whether I'll have time. Aargh!

I'm fixated by the riddle. My first thought was ice, but that seems too obvious ...

Sometimes what's too obvious is right, though. If the poetic licence is in the word "bone" then it's certainly ice. (If it's in the word "water" then I suppose it might be ossification or other interesting things, but less likely, wouldn't you say?).

death, perhaps? Blood and flesh disappearing to "become" only bone? Or fossilisation? the sea compacting to stone? It doesn't matter though really, because the wording of it is so ... oh, I don't know, primitive and old and rich. Earthy is the right word. On the way to what, I wonder?

If I wasn't so hopelessly bad at the languages I'm already studying, I'd love to learn Old English.

(ps. who are you?)

I USED TO KNOW THAT RIDDLE! god, what was it? i'll be thinking of this all day now. have i mentioned how much i love the fact you're so excited about this module? usually i hate sharing passions with people, but i guess you're an exception.

that photo is gorgeous. is it digital (and if so, did it get any digital darkroom treatment; level adjustment etc)? how was it lit? did you use flash? if it's not digital, what sort of film? the colour of your hair against the colours of the flood. it's like diametric extremes.

(+ generally) you're so pre-raphaelite; it's beautiful. xx

(oh, jesus, that really looks like i haven't read your post properly. when i ask 'did you use flash' i mean 'was flash used' and and and. ohhhhhhh. why do i even feel i have to explain this?! i'll be quiet now.)

ps; i find it impossible to deliberate over self-portraits. i hate myself as a subject, but i'm the only model i've got. i wish i could produce something fantastic like original_sinner, say, but i can't bear to spend that long fiddling with (essentially) my own appearance. zoinks.

I'm the only person who enjoyed the lecture yesterday - everyone else was moaning about how boring it was because the lecturer wasn't particularly dynamic. I'm so interested in this module it really doesn't matter whether they crack jokes or not.

Yes, it was digital. I've no idea what Gabrielle did with it; I think she sharpened the contrasts, but couldn't tell you much more...

And yay, thank you! Pre-raph is the Right Thing to say to me... x

'The Vagina Monologues'? Wow. What did you do with Flood and what kind of woman did you have playing it.

I'll add you back.
