...thats horrible... and unfortunately not so uncommon. i think they actually have a name for that particular disorder, when parents (especially moms) purposely make their children sick to get sympathy and attention... this being for profit is just an extra twist.
Yea, it's called Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. This story is a bit of a twist, because the mother wasn't actually making the child sick... she was just convincing her she was sick, shaving her head, all psychological. True Munchausen Syndromes will deliberately make their children sick (cleaning agents in their food, etc, like in The Sixth Sense).
I can't help but think that the child will be somewhat glad that she isn't going to die... but I bet she'd be an interesting conversationalist when she grows up a bit.
