These islands, are there any buildings on them, any resources, or are they just straight out on their asses under the elements?

The islands are devoid of anything save sand (or ice) and mice! They are straight out on their asses under the elements.

Also, the same energy drain inflicted when your character injures another also applies for the duration of their prison-island stay.

i appear to have missed what this energy drain is

As noted in the FAQ, whenever one character injures another, he or she experiences an energy drain (akin to having the flu) until the other character is healed (or after 72 hours) or, in the case of death, when the character revives.
