That's great that they did so well. I would have no idea where to begin if i were starting a choir. Way to step up to the plate. In the future though, don't tell anyone anything about yourself. :)
I love the way you write -- have I told you that? You have a way of adding character and charm to your stories.
I'm glad that you have had an enjoyable first year. I know that your teaching career has been tough, but it sounds like you are in a good place right now.
Have you decided if you are still going to teach there next year?
I am just a random person that happened to stumbleupon your page and I couldn't help but comment on this post. I have always wondered why people became teachers. I tutor students in mathematics, however I dont believe it is the same thing. I have always had the conflict of becoming a math teacher or not. I fear that not having the passion that you do would affect my teaching. I know I have a passion for math, however how do you know if you have a passion for teaching it?
That's a tough one. Honestly, you just have to go out and try it. Throughout college, I tutored so many in math and was told several times that I had a knack for explaining the concepts. So I very reluctantly switched my major to math education. I had the fortune of having some REALLY good math ed professors and got involved with NCTM. Both of these things really fueled my desire to teach math.
Then I started teaching which was the real test. I took a beating and got up and asked for another. At the end of the day, I enjoyed what I did. I've come a long way from my first year but I still question myself on a daily basis. Teaching is hard but it's worth it.
To answer your question... you just know. It takes a unique and special kind of person to become a teacher. Specifically for math, you need to know various ways to approach problems and be able to anticipate students making mistakes. If you are questioning it, then you should at least try it.
