FIC - Should I Fall Behind

Aug 21, 2011 00:37

This is somethhing I wrote months ago, and someone asked me to post it to my journal, as it was posted originally to a locked community. So here it is, my little Spike/Angel ficlet that I wrote after Clarence Clemmons passed.

Years and decades and centuries, so much lost and so much gained. Vampires with souls weren’t a dime a dozen, after all, neither were there all that many who’d loved a Slayer, or fought against an apocalypse, so there were ties other than blood that bound Spike and Angel to each other.

If as we’re walking, a hand should slip free, I’ll wait for you, and should I fall behind, wait for me.

It seemed inevitable that they would fall in love, maybe not the kind of love that humans might seek out and recognize, and certainly not the kind of love either of them ever thought they’d find. But there it was, not the bond of Sire and Child or of Owner and Owned, but of two souls that touched and comforted and fought back the loneliness that threated to overcome either of them from time to time.

Now everyone dreams of a love lasting and true, but you and I know what this world can do

Loving each other wasn’t easy given all that had passed between them, all that had haunted and hurt both Spike and Angel, including (maybe most of all) each other. But over time it started to feel like the most natural thing in the world. They had made each other a promise, neither would leave the other again, having no way of knowing how long “forever” might turn out to be for immortals. They each made their steps clear to the other, so the chance of there being a distance between them was lessened. Spike needed Angel and Angel needed Spike, and neither of them would have it any other way. Looking toward the future wasn’t such a bleak prospect anymore.

Should we lose each other in the shadow of the evening trees, I’ll wait for you, and should I fall behind, wait for me
