Dawn was spending the night with Janice, as she so often did these days. Their friends Lily and Cecilia were there too, and they had finished braiding each other’s hair. Everyone’s nails were painted. They were all changed into their pjs. But it wasn’t early enough to sleep, not for a slumber party. No one wanted their bra soaked in water and stuck in the freezer, that was for damn sure.

The other girls all seemed excited when Janice pulled out the Ouija Board. It was going to be fun, they were just going to see what happened. It was a kids’ game, after all, nothing to be afraid of. Except they didn’t know what Dawn knew.

Conversation ensued about who they’d try to talk to in the spirit world. Out of respect, no one suggested that Dawn’s mother or sister would be a candidate. In the end they just figured they’d concentrate on anyone’s spirit who was close and see what happened.

All four of them put a finger on the pointer piece of the game. Cecilia took the lead, asking if there were any spirits who wanted to speak to them. Nothing happened. Lily tried next, saying that they really wanted to communicate with any kind of spirit who happened to hear them, you know, as long as it wasn’t some kind of scary thing that might come kill them all in their sleep.

Dawn remained silent. Until the piece started moving. And spelled out her name. Her friends stared at her accusingly, asking if she’d moved the pointer. Dawn insisted that she hadn’t, and immediately removed her finger so she could just sit back and see if anything happened next.

The pointer continued to move.

Dawn. (Again.)

Sorry. I am ok. So sorry.

At this point, the other three girls were freaked out enough that they all moved back and stopped touching the game piece.

But it kept moving.

Promise, Dawnie. I really am ok.

Lily chimed in first, after the combined looks of horror and fascination on the girls’ faces registered.

“I’m really getting tired. Come on, let’s put this away and go to sleep.”

With a solemn vow of no bra-freezing, the girls put the game back into the box and got into their sleeping bags. They all fell asleep within minutes.

Except for Dawn, who waited until she was sure everyone else was out before she started to cry.
