So I realize that I never post here anymore, but I am lately perplexed by something and have no other real forum on which to air the matter; it isn't really a topic for any of my other blogs, or my guild site, but it's not a Wowsues or something matter either.  But here it is:

My character, my main character, is a night elf (as I expect anyone who ( Read more... )

It's like when people come to America from other countries and then Americans start yelling about how "THEY'RE IN AMERICA THEY SHOULD SPEAK ENGLISH CONSARNIT"

aka they are nitwits, and possibly rednecks

redneck dwarves

Or redneck draenei, in the most recent case. For some reason draenei RPers seem the second most common subscribers to this approach, after dwarves.

Consarnit. *giggle*

I have a couple Troll characters that do that because they're assholes, and that's really the only explaination I can come up with for this phenomenon - they're the same type of people that would see the Mandarin couple talking to each other at the market and be like "ENGLISH, DAMMIT".

People seem to like using the most jerky way of getting attention, then don't like the resuuult.

Yeah, it's the not-liking-the-result I don't get. If all the Stranger wanted was to RP a belligerent xenophobic asshat for thirty seconds, then cool, hope it was fun. But if s/he wanted, I dunno, to RP with us, then I am frankly baffled as to their bafflement when this approach fails to win friends and influence people.

This happens so often that I feel like I should make a PSA or something for people. How Not To Initiate Random RP. The More You Know!

What is this "Secondary Language" business of which you speak ( ... )

*waves frantically at BA, hops up and down*

You should visit us on MG sometimes! I am totally still also a Gnome Lawyer Rogue (though I dunno about the BEST, *blush*), though she goes by Inkie now rather than Iridiah.

Your response is interesting because I hadn't considered the races without a secondary language. But, yeah, most of the shit Niainde gets seems to be from dwarves and draenei and other folks with their own native-speak, too.

And for people who are pals, like fellow Company-members, Nia is always happy to teach a few choice Darnassian swear words. A surprising lot of the other races in the Company can swear pretty well in Darnassian at this point. I wish there were a way to learn other languages without an addon, too.

YAY BA.

The answer is pretty much: they are OOC dumb and/or IC belligerent assholes and, in the end, you're probably better off not RPing with them further anyway.

And this is coming from someone whose main who used to detest (and still does, on occassion) hearing musha-musha because she thought that OBVIOUSLY they were all just making fun of her. She still didn't scream at them to speak Common, though. ...I think.

See, but I totally sympathize with Eliss cos that's a whole DIFF'RENT scenario. When you are sitting at a table with two or three people who are allegedly pals of yours, it IS totally rude for them to carry on talking over your head in a language you don't know. My OOC sympathies are all with Eliss, in those situations.

This, though, isn't that. This is random strangers flouncing into a conversation in which they're not at all currently involved, to tell us we're being rude for speaking Darnassian within their delicate earshot. And, yeah. I guess dumb/assholes is the only rational explanation. Sigh.
