2nd Con [Video]

[Some might recognize one of the Row houses behind Eliot Kenneth as he's concentrating really hard on the PCD. Given the first mutterings, the concentration was clearly needed just to get the network post started. The fact that he's shirtless, in the rain, is probably related to the shovel he's leaning on.]

Right, so, I was wondering if there's ( Read more... )

My girlfriend and I are trying to start a garden, but it's not easy here.

As for suggestions? Grow inside. Twice now since I've been here, people with gardens have lost them due to flooding. You'll probably have the best luck if you can make a greenhouse, or plant on higher ground.

So changing the rest of the place when it's suddenly submerged isn't typical, huh? I'll have to look into it. Anything in particular about the soil to keep in mind, though? The only thing I've noticed so far while overturning it is that the land ain't too rocky so far.

I'm no expert, but we're thinking we'll try to plant the heartiest crops we can get our hands on. I'd like to get potatoes in one day. [This is more wistful than anything.]

If you're looking to help everyone out, we're looking for volunteers to help build a fence -- there's livestock here, but it's a pain to catch right now.

Yeah, just be careful when transferring the crops.

[Well, helping people out can get the favor returned. It seems like people might be that way here.]

I know how to make notch type fences, so you'll just have to secure it with rope or wire of some kind, if nails aren't in high enough supply.

I'll add to Sokka's advice. On top of the lower grounds being at risk of flooding, the earth there will have the highest concentration of waste from the last few floods, as they were absorbed into it. For some time the city was coated with dark mud- worse than the stuff out there today. I wouldn't willingly eat anything planted in that stuff.

[The waste thing? That right there is what he was worried about. While there are some herbs that could do all right, no matter the contamination, he doesn't know if there's any around, or other alternatives.]

That's most unfortunate to hear. Sounds like it'll be more work than originally planned to get it started. Are there any herbs or weeds that have been thriving around the times after the floods?

Import earth.

[He suggests.]

From the hills, into planters.

That's part of the plan, getting the soil elsewhere. I'd like to get around to treating the ground too, if it's that bad.

Shelter whatever you plant. It's rained pastries before.

[Dead serious.]

[That's some serious talking, there. There's a pause, he's taking this one thing at a time.]

... What kind of pastries?

iceandivory August 15 2011, 18:17:47 UTC
Muffins, actually.

A good variety of muffins?

[He might just work on putting together some nets and frames for awnings instead of solid shelters.]

Keeping a farm sounds like a good idea.

Nothing so big, but I grew my own food back home as well.

Still it would be very useful to have your own supply.

It seems like something most people here have to do.

Do you have a lot of skill in those areas?

Among some others, including the music. I lived in a country area, and took a couple of cooking classes in school.

[A nice mix of alias and truth to make it harder to pick apart.]

It's just a mix of survival and getting the girls. Women appreciate a strong man that can cook and strum the guitar a bit.
