Ok, I read a review for this book, and I'm amazed.  Not because I want to read this (although I admit, I do) but because I want to DO this.  What he did was read the bible, which is a daunting task all on its own, and then write his own commentaries.  He's not a trained theologist, and he doesn't approach it from a theologists standpoint, but

I have tried to read the bible straight through. I get to the begats in Genesis, and I give up every time.

This, however, might be worth it!

Sounds like what my reading group did, but we didn't tackle the Bible. The Ramayana was sufficient.
